Subject: University Writing Center- UWC Summer Services

Hello,
As many of you know, the University Writing Center (UWC) transferred all graduate student services online in response to the COVID crisis.   We hope you’ll see us for writing support this summer and we’ll be conducting consultations M-Th 10-5.  We will also be offering weekly writing groups, monthly writing retreats, and workshops to help graduate students stay on track towards the completion of their thesis or dissertation.

Students can make an appointment through Symplicity or contact us through Chat for scheduling assistance.  If they have specific questions when we are not open, they can use our Handouts, which provide guidance on frequently asked questions.

Best,

Kristin Gilger, Ph.D
Graduate Services Coordinator, University Writing Center

*A sample of Exit Poll Comments since shifting services online:

  • I think access to the meeting was super easy despite everything being online now.

  • I loved the collaborative nature—[my consultant) was extremely helpful and made it easy to get ideas sparked.

  • I really liked her advice on color coding paragraphs/sentences by topic to help with organization. I liked that she stayed on the call to help me with that process, as that could have been something she could have told me to do on my own time.

  • This appointment was great for helping me revise my rough draft. I know what I need to do on my own to finish it…. [My consultant] was awesome and kind, while still providing good constructive feedback.

Subject: Request for participation in NSF CAREER study on graduate engineering education

Hello engineering graduate students,

First, and foremost, I hope that you are safe, healthy, and maintaining some semblance of sanity during this time of uncertainty. My name is Dr. Catherine Berdanier. I am an Assistant Professor of Mechanical Engineering at the Pennsylvania State University. I am conducting a nationwide study on graduate engineering student wellbeing, attrition, and persistence. This work is funded through an NSF CAREER Grant. Some of you may recall a very similar email in your inbox last semester. This is an ongoing recruitment process and we apologize for any duplicated emails. If you did not participate last semester, or have differing opinions this semester, my research team and I are asking for your help and experiences as we investigate and model the complexities of graduate engineering education.

If you are interested in sharing your experiences with us through interviews and survey methods, please follow the link below to a screening survey to indicate your willingness to participate. Again, if you previously completed this survey, and your perspective has not changed, please ignore this survey. A member of our research team will follow up with more study details, consent forms, and scheduling to participate in an interview.
