PhD Program of Work

The Graduate Advisor may approve coursework credit for a waiver of up to 6 credit hours (two courses) of graduate level coursework on the BME PhD program of work . To clarify, there is no official process at UT Austin to transfer coursework toward the for students who matriculate with a master's degree. Coursework is not officially transferred and will not show up on your UT Austin transcript.

To request a PhD program of work waiver, rather, your PhD requirements may be reduced.

Master's degree seeking students may officially transfer coursework taken at other institutions if the courses were not used toward another degree. 

It is common for BME doctoral students who earned a master's degree at another institution to receive departmental credit for up to 6 credit hours of coursework. To obtain approval to reduce your required PhD coursework:

send your master's transcripts and your specific request to the Graduate Advisor at adunn@utexas.edu. 

  • Identify the BME PhD coursework requirement(s) you want reduced and the course(s) you took previously that meet that requirement.
  • You may be asked to supply provide a syllabus for each course.
  • Reduced requirements do not imply the transfer of credits, so no they will be documented on your UT transcript.

  • Please ensure the GC has a copy of your coursework waiver approval for documentation in your student file.
