What is Edge?

  • Edge is the edX platform offered to the institution to develop courses in a low-visible environment
  • Edge provides you with a space to experiment with online course development. Building in the Edge environment is pretty straight forward.
  • Typically the platform is closed and has limited enrollment (for example, limited to the students participating in a course offered through campus unit), whereas MOOCs are open enrollment for everyone.
  •  Its functionality is identical to that of the known edx.org platform

What is the difference between edX and edge?

  • edX is the home of MOOCs and open to the world while edge is open to on-campus courses.
  • The platform technology is the same, edX/open edX.
  • Usually, we develop on edge to experiment with to them move to the MOOC platform.
  • Edge does not have a catalog page. Edge is "security-by-obscurity": there is no discovery process for courses. Students will have to know your course URL to register for it
  • From edX Forums: What is the difference between edX and Edge?

What are the environments available?

What does it cost to create and deliver a course on Edge?
  • The use of the edX authoring and delivery platform are available to all UT instructors to create and deliver courses
  • The cost is the cost of your time to design and develop content for the course.

Does it have eid integration?

  • There is no eid integration, registrants register for the course through email.

Where do I start?

  • Take the self-service course “EdX 101” to understand what features are available in the platform to guide your decision of using it
  • Start by getting access to edX Edge Studio (the authoring environment) and learning how it works.
  • Send an email to sejal@austin.utexas.edu with the email you registered, to request a sandbox course
