Tenure-track faculty have a limited window of time—generally six years of probationary service--within which they are meant to achieve a record eligible for tenure and promotion at the university. If a tenure-track faculty member encounters certain personal circumstances that impede progress toward tenure, they may request an extension to their probationary period so that they might have additional time to accomplish research goals before undergoing promotion & tenure review.
