Overview of Dean's Distinguished Faculty Awards

Nominations will first be reviewed by departmental committees with one nominee for each award going forward to Dean’s Office (note that the departmental nominations are due to the dean’s office by March 1). Dean Martinez will convene a committee to review nominations who will make recommendations to him for final selection. 

Five awards are available - see brief descriptions of each below. See additional information about each award on separate tabs on this page.

List of Awards

Dean’s Distinguished Career Faculty Award

To recognize a career faculty member (professional/non-tenure track) in the College of Education who has been on faculty in the COE for at least five years and compiled a distinguished record in at least two of the following areas: teaching at the undergraduate and/or graduate level, research, or service.  This award is meant to acknowledge and celebrate the faculty member’s impact on the department, the college, and the field.

Dean’s Distinguished Teaching Award

To recognize a faculty member in the College of Education who has compiled a distinguished record of teaching at the undergraduate and/or graduate level, and has been teaching in the college for at least 5 years.  Selection will be based on evidence of sustained excellence in teaching, as evidenced by peer evaluations, participation in course and program design, instructional innovation, and student comments and ratings on CIS evaluations.

Dean’s Distinguished Community Impact Award

To recognize a faculty member in the College of Education who has been on the faculty for at least five years with extraordinary achievement across their portfolios. In particular, this faculty member has compiled a distinguished record of addressing education and/or health disparities, and centering access and equitable opportunities for students, families and other stakeholders by working in close partnership with communities of practice. In bridging research and practice, the faculty member has led efforts to connect faculty, staff, and/or students in their program/department/college, the University of Texas with broader communities in Central Texas, the state of Texas, the nation, and beyond.

Dean’s Distinguished Research Award

To recognize a mid-career/senior faculty member in the College of Education who has been on faculty for at least five years and has developed a distinguished record of research/scholarly contributions (the Associate Dean for Research and Graduate Studies can grant exceptions to other research-related professionals who would like to be eligible for this award). Selection will be based on evidence of sustained excellence in research, including such things as publications (quantity and quality), grant activity, and impact and significance of research/scholarship to the field.

Dean’s Distinguished Early Career Faculty Award

To recognize an early career tenure-track faculty member in the College of Education in their fourth, fifth or sixth year in rank as an assistant professor who has compiled a distinguished record of research.

Dean’s Distinguished Career Faculty Award

Purpose

To recognize a career faculty member (non-tenure track) in the College of Education who has been on faculty in the COE for at least five years and compiled a distinguished record in at least two of the following areas: teaching at the undergraduate and/or graduate level, research, or service.  This award is meant to acknowledge and celebrate the faculty member’s impact on the department, the college, and the field.

Award

The award recipient will be recognized with a certificate and will receive a stipend of $2,500.

Nomination Procedure

Nominations are solicited from the students and faculty of the college, to be sent to the appropriate department chair.  Each department may nominate one career (non-tenure track) faculty member.  Nominations shall include the following:

1 incomplete A nominating letter from the chair (no more than one page)
2 incomplete A curriculum vitae 3 incomplete At least two supporting letters from students 4 incomplete If teaching is a part of review, include each statement below, no longer than two single-spaced pages:

a. A teaching statement

b. Copies of all course-instructor evaluations for the last three years, including student written comments

c. Concrete examples of other evidence of teaching excellence including course development, program development, and field involvement (please limit to no more than three pages)

5 incomplete If service is part of review, a service statement (no longer than two single-spaced pages)
6 incomplete If research is part of review, a research statement (no longer than two single-spaced pages)

Nomination Deadline

All nomination materials are to be in the Dean’s Office by March 1, 2024. Please submit materials as a single PDF to Sonja Runberg at sonja.runberg@austin.utexas.edu.

Selection Procedure

Final selection will be made by a committee appointed by the Dean and chaired by an Associate Dean. Recipient will be notified of the award in May.

Dean’s Distinguished Teaching Award

Purpose

To recognize a faculty member in the College of Education who has compiled a distinguished record of teaching at the undergraduate and/or graduate level, and has been teaching in the college for at least 5 years.  Selection will be based on evidence of sustained excellence in teaching, as evidenced by peer evaluations, participation in course and program design, instructional innovation, and student comments and ratings on CIS evaluations.

Award

The award recipient will be recognized with a certificate and will receive a stipend of $2,500.

Nomination Procedure

Nominations are solicited from the students and faculty of the college, to be sent to the appropriate department chair.  Each department may nominate one faculty member.  Nomination packets should be no more than 20 pages. Nominations shall include the following:

7 incomplete A nominating letter from the chair (no more than one page)
8 incomplete A teaching statement (two single-spaced pages) 9 incomplete One supporting letter from a faculty colleague 10 incomplete Up to three supporting letters from students 11 incomplete Copies of official teaching load reports for the last five years 27 incomplete A bulleted list of concrete examples of other evidence of teaching excellence including course development, program development, field involvement, and additional emails/letters from students or peers (no more than two single-spaced pages) 13 incomplete Copies of all course-instructor evaluations for the last three years, including student written comments

15 incomplete A curriculum vitae 30 incomplete No more than three supporting letters from colleagues and/or community members attesting to the nominee’s community impact and successes in translating the college’s academic and research mission to be in service of problems of practice. One letter must be from an individual or organization outside of The University of Texas at Austin. 28 incomplete A bulleted list providing evidence of community service and impact (press releases, media articles, letters), no more than two pages 19 incomplete Personal statement, no longer than three pages, that highlights the nominee's extraordinary commitment to translating research to practice and community engagement and impact.

To recognize an early career tenure-track faculty member in the College of Education in their fourth, fifth or sixth year in rank as an assistant professor who has compiled a distinguished record of research.

Award

The award recipient will be recognized with a certificate and will receive a stipend of $2,500.

Nomination Procedure

Nominations are solicited from the students and faculty of the college, to be sent to the appropriate department chair.  Each department may nominate one faculty member.  Nominations shall include the following:

25 incomplete A curriculum vitae 26 incomplete A statement that overviews the faculty member's research, no longer than two single-spaced pages
