Student Health Insurance Plan (SHIP) also known as Academic Health Plans

All currently enrolled UT students are eligible for the UT student health plan from Academic Health Plans

You will also need a supporting documentation that you need only 1 month of SHIP insurance. You can request this supporting documentation from the graduate coordinator using the official letter qualtrics

UT Select Employee Insurance

Student employees (GRAs, TAs, AIs) are eligible for employee health insurance during the dates of their employment. Additionally, benefits-eligible spring TAs or AIs with active assignments on May 31 will keep their UT Select coverage for the summer, even if they do not have an assignment and are not enrolled during the summer. This is not the case for GRAs. Student Employee Insurance.

If you are a 20-Hour TA in the spring semester, your out-of-pocket insurance expenses (not the premiums) for the entire summer will be taken out of your June paycheck (for working the month of May), regardless of your summer employment status. If you do not want this to happen, and if you will be employed in a benefits-eligible position over the summer, you will need to complete a Cancellation of Pre-Payment for Summer Insurance Coverage form sometime in early May (scroll to almost the bottom of the page).

You do not need to be concerned about insurance if you do not change your funding status from semester to semester. That is, if you move from a TA to a GRA or GRA to TA, your funding is still coming from Payroll so you do not need to be concerned about a break in your insurance. Similarly, if you are moving from funding tied to work (TA or GRA) to a fellowship, you do not need to be concerned about a break in your insurance. However, if you are transitioning from a fellowship, where you are on student health insurance, to a work appointment there is a two-week period where there is no insurance. Student health insurance ends at the end of December and employee health insurance (UT Select) begins January 15th.

If you are an international student, you will see a charge for approximately $215 (the exact amount changes from year to year) on your tuition bill called “Supplemental Ins.” Your PI can pay this as a tuition payment and it should be taken care of without any discussion.

If you are a domestic student, you will need to purchase health insurance to cover the two-week gap. Student health insurance can be purchased here: https://utexas.myahpcare.com/. You will have to communicate with the insurance company about purchasing a single month (that is the smallest increment). To cover the payment, you will be issued an additional “scholarship” for the amount of the insurance. If your fellowship is routed through the graduate school, you were likely paid this additional fellowship amount in your final fellowship payment. The only way to know this is to do the math, or you can ask the graduate coordinator. It is your responsibility to know when your insurance begins and end.

International GRAs and TAs will need to complete the student employment insurance waiver to decline student health insurance. Information and links to completing the insurance waiver:

https://world.utexas.edu/isss/insurance/students/waivers

Complete the insurance waiver in UTDirect here: https://utdirect.utexas.edu/apps/isss/insr/waiver/. Note that sometimes this link does not work. You may need to go through the ISSS website, above.

For international students using SHIP for the Spring AND planning to graduate in the Spring, you will need to waive the Summer SHIP costs. You can find the form and instructions to complete the summer waiver on the ISSS website, linked above. If you wind up not graduating in the Spring, you can always request the waiver to be removed, but if you don't request the waiver, you will be charged for summer insurance and this charge can not be refunded

After Graduation

If students were benefits-eligible and enrolled in employee health insurance, they are eligible for COBRA continuation coverage. International students are also eligible for SHIP continuation coverage as of January 2020 for 3 months.
