Information and Requirements

What is an en-route Master's: an en-route Master's is a Master's degree that a doctoral student earns during their doctoral studies (en-route to the PhD). En-route degrees in EDP are only available to students currently enrolled in a Ph.D. program at UT Austin.

Overview

An en-route master's degree is a master’s degree earned by doctoral (Ph.D.) students during their doctoral program. EDP doctoral students have the option to earn an en-route master’s degree in addition to the Ph.D. Students typically pursue an en-route master’s in their current program area, but may choose an option from a different specialization with that program’s approval. For en-route master's in the same specialization as the doctoral degree, most course requirements will already be fulfilled as part of the doctoral degree program.  Some students choose an en-route master's in an area outside their area of specialization - these en-route degrees involve a varying amount of additional coursework and requirements, depending on the student's chosen electives during their PhD program. Many of met through the Ph.D. coursework. If the en-route degree options include a Master's Report, Thesis or Portfolio. For these degree options, students often have already completed the majority of the Master's Report/Thesis/Portfolio requirements as part of their required course preparation for the Qualifying Process examination. Therefore, students often turn their Qualifying Process document into a Master’s Report/Thesis/Portfolio to fulfill the en-route requirement. Some advisers will permit a student simply to reformat their Qualifying Process document so that it meets the requirements of the Graduate School. Other advisers may require the addition of a section that includes the application of the topic to the master’s degree.

Any student earning an en-route master’s degree must contact the Graduate Coordinator (1) as soon as the en-route degree is decided upon, and (2) the semester prior to graduation. In order to earn the degree, students will apply online to graduate with their master’s on the Graduate School website at the start of the semester in which they will be completing all the master's degree requirements.

Getting Started

A formal application is not required for current EDP doctoral students to begin an en-route master’s in their own specialization. However, if you plan to pursue one in a different specialization, an application and approval from the Area Chair may be required.

If you are opting to pursue an en-route degree, you must notify the EDP Graduate Coordinator, as an official Degree Plan and paperwork will need to be started.

Completing the Degree

Before or at the start of the semester in which you will be finishing the master’s:

  • Notify the Graduate Coordinator: email EDP@austin.utexas.edu so paperwork can begin. They will send you a Change of Major form for signature.

    • Change of Major Form: you will be temporarily switched from your Ph.D. major code into the relevant Master’s major code. This allows the Graduate School to officially award the degree. After the degree is awarded, you will be switched back to your Ph.D. major code.

  • Apply to Graduate: Afterthe Change of Major is processed, apply to graduate via the Graduate School website. We recommend doing this at the start of the semester in which you plan to finish the degree.

  • Diploma Mailing Info: Before the semester ends, confirm your diploma mailing address via Diploma Services.

  • Commencement : Once your degree is approved, you’ll be invited to participate in the College of Education’s May master’s commencement ceremony (invitations are usually sent in March/April).
