Qualifying
...
Exam
The Department recommends PhD students take the qualifying exam at the
...
conclusion of their first year of
...
doctoral studies. Key points:
- The qualifying exam committee must
...
- consist of at least three faculty members, including
...
- the student's PhD advisor.
- There are no requirements regarding the number of committee members from outside the Graduate Studies Committee (GSC).
- The qualifying exam is an oral examination with a Pass/Fail
...
- outcome.
- Upon successful completion of the qualifying exam,
...
- students should submit:
- An abstract of
...
- their PhD dissertation
...
- A potential dissertation title
...
- These documents are necessary to apply for PhD candidacy
...
- .
Comprehensive Exam
The Department recommends PhD students take the comprehensive exam at least one year prior to their dissertation defense, ideally during their third year of study. Important details:
- The comprehensive exam committee is identical to the PhD defense committee.
- The PhD defense committee must comprise at least four faculty members, with a minimum of one member from outside the CAEE Graduate Studies Committee (GSC).
- Format of the comprehensive exam:
- Students deliver a 50-minute presentation.
- Students must submit a written document (sample chapters) to the committee at least one week before the exam date.
- The comprehensive exam is not a Pass/Fail assessment. Instead, it serves as an opportunity for students to receive feedback from the committee prior to the final defense.
- Conducting the comprehensive exam approximately one year before the defense provides ample time for students to incorporate committee feedback.
