The Graduate Advisor may approve coursework credit for up to 6 credit hours (two courses) of graduate level coursework on the PhD program of work. To clarify, there is no official process at UT Austin to transfer coursework toward the PhD program of work, rather, your PhD requirements may be reduced.

Master's degree seeking students may officially transfer coursework taken at other institutions if the courses were not used toward another degree.

It is common for BME doctoral students who earned a master's degree at another institution to receive departmental credit for up to 6 credit hours of coursework. To obtain approval to reduce your required PhD coursework:

  • Send a copy of your previous graduate transcript to the Graduate Advisor. Identify the BME PhD coursework requirement(s) you want reduced and the course(s) you took previously that meet that requirement.
  • You may be asked to supply a syllabus for each course.
  • Reduced requirements do not imply the transfer of credits, so no they will be documented on your UT transcript.

Course credit approvals are kept by the Graduate Coordinator. If the Graduate Advisor approves a coursework reduction, ensure documentation is forwarded to the Graduate Coordinator.
