Where can I get a UT email address?

UTmail, https://get.utmail.utexas.edu/, provides UT Austin students and alumni with a university affiliated e- mail address at no cost in the @utexas.edu domain. Those who opt-in to the service can choose their e-mail address and have 30+ GB of e-mail storage. In addition, UTmail provides e-mail for life.

Who is eligible to use the lab?

The LRC is open to all Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering students, faculty, and staff, as well   as students currently enrolled in any CAEE course. There are 3 separate rooms located on the 2rd  floor of ECJ. The Studio Classrooms are reserved for course labs so be sure to check the reservation flyer on the door before entering.

How do I get a User Account?

Since the LRC computers are in the AUSTIN domain, you’ll use your UTEID to log in. As long as you are registered for the semester no additional action is required on your part to be able to use the computers in the CAEE LRC.

Is there a server I can use to save my files?

Four GBs of disk storage is available to all students on AUSTIN DISK, austin.utexas.edu. You must first enable your UT EID to access the server by going to http://www.engr.utexas.edu/itg/data/321-students and selecting the “Enable your account” link. After you enable your account, a home directory with 4 GB disk quota for file storage will automatically be created for you on \\austin.utexas.edu\disk\engrstu\CAEE\your_eid.  The machines in the LRC will automatically map the Z: drive to this location every time you log on. *** Any files located on the Desktop or My Documents will delete when you log off ***

Don't forget to log off when you're finished working in the lab.

Are there other options for storing my files?

Box cloud storage is a campus-wide service that allows faculty, staff and students at the University of Texas at Austin unlimited use of Box cloud-based file sharing for academic and business use. Go to https://utexas.box.com to get your UTBox account.

***** CAEE TA’s and graders: I want to take this opportunity to inform you that if you use your personal computer/laptop as part of your TA/grader job duties, you should not keep any confidential student information such as grades on it.  *****

Can I access the lab after hours?

Authorized access cardholders will be allowed into the lab area after normal operating hours. After the 12 class day of the semester, all CAEE students will automatically be given after-hours access to the Learning Resource Center, ECJ 2.206, and both Studio Classrooms, ECJ 2.210 and 2.218.

PLEASE DO NOT PROP THE DOORS OPEN!

How can I print?

8.5 x 11 black/white laser printing and plotting are available from all the LRC workstations. Each student receives a printing quota of $40 each semester. Regular black/white laser printing costs .06 per page. Color laser printing is no longer available under this quota system. The printers located in the LRC are automatically configured for all users so in most cases you do not need to add a printer.

UTPrint: An ITS black/white and color printer is available in the LRC once you run out of your allocated print quota. “Bevobucks” (http://bevobucks.utexas.edu/) are required to use these printers. Printing costs are higher than the LRC printers.

What software is available in the lab?

Microsoft Office 2016, Bentley Microstation XM, AutoCAD 2018, Revit 2018, ArcGIS Pro, Adobe Acrobat, Matlab, and Microsoft Visual Studio are just a few of the applications installed on the lab machines. A complete list can be viewed on the LRC website.

Under the TAH Matlab Student license all current students are licensed to install on their personally-owned computers, the same set of products available faculty and academic staff. Students can find detailed instructions for getting TAH Student software at http://it.utexas.edu/services/software-application > Matlab.

Free Autodesk products such as AutoCAD and Revit are also available for students to install on their personally owned computers. Visit http://www.autodesk.com/education/free-software/all  for more info.

Microsoft Office 2016 can be downloaded for free from the Office 365 Portal – https://office365.austin.utexas.edu. Keep in mind that it will stop working when you are no longer a UT student.

Can access the programs available in the LRC remotely?

The CAEE department, in collaboration with the Cockrell School of Engineering and other engineering departments, is offering a new Application Delivery (AppD) service that allow students and faculty 24/7 access to LRC software through AppD's virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI). By installing a client on your machine (Windows, Mac, Linux, iOS, Android), you will be able to access LRC software with your web browser. Detailed instructions on how to access this service can be found at http://www.caee.utexas.edu/students/itss/43-students/it/386-virtualdesktops.

Warning!

The University Information Technology Security Office constantly monitors the network for inappropriate and illegal activities.  Some examples of inappropriate use include email spamming, sharing accounts and passwords, and establishing servers (mp3, avi, DVD, game) for activities other than academic purposes.

Free virus protection and security software is available to all UT students at http://it.utexas.edu/services/security > Antivirus Software.
