Software restrictions

•  The ME student license of Solidworks may be used for class purposes only.  Students needing to use Solidworks for reasech need to contact service.desk@engr.utexas.edu and ask about purchasing reaserch licenses or other CAD products that may be available.

How can I access this software

•  Solidworks is available via
  • The METER lab (ETC 2.126)
  • The ME virtual desktop environment (http://www.engr.utexas.edu/itg/facilities/virtualdesktop)
  • Install onto personally owned laptops (this method may NOT be used on any UT owned system!).

    2. Follow the instructions that appear after filling out the request (make sure you leave open the instruction window or copy the contents into a text editor for later reference

Common Problems

• Solidworks won't install onto my Apple computer

Solidworks only works in Windows which is why we specify Windows in the ME laptop requirements.  If you have an Apple, you can run Windows in BootCamp or as a Virtual Machine.  For either, you can get a copy of Windows from http://www.engr.utexas.edu/itg/products/434-microsoft-dreamspark-premium

  • Do NOT use VirtualBox as a VM utility.  It is not supported, and Solidworks will not license, activate, nor download if VirtualBox is used.
  • For virtual machine utilities, you have two supported virtual machine utility options:
    • Parallels Desktop For Mac.
    • VMWare Fusion.
    • Please note that you will lose some performance (about 10%) by using a virtual machine utility.
