Dedicated housing and crates that are made for storage/shipping can be tracked as a housing component to aid with location tracking when a work is removed for display. Generic storage boxes that are not dedicated to a specific object do not need to be tracked and are expected to have current contents labeled on the outside and the shelf location is sufficient for locating these objects.
Determining correct classification of accessories and housing.
Is the container art? Yes, unique accession number, location tracked, linked to each object
Is it a part of the whole? If yes, add as part of object
Is it an accessory? Add as accessory component
Is the container study collection worthy and/or could it possibly be displayed at some point? Yes, NA number, location tracked, linked as related object
Is the container essential to keep as documentation/historical reference? Link as accessory to first record store, track in remarks
Is the container worth storing? Yes, see above, no, confirm with curator if it can be discarded. If the latter, document and dispose.
