How to Submit Trademark Request (and Order Apparel)

When trying to print any protected UT Trademarks, a trademark request must be submitted and approved prior to print/purchase. This must be done for any/all print job(s), even if printing the same design on the same material with the same vendor.

Here are some of the protected logos. You can view a list of vendors that can source your product by using this website search (pick UT-Austin).

Setting up an apparel order (or multiple) for your club can be a large task. We are here to help, but we request that you review this page that we've created to answer FAQ's. First, the trademark request process is outlined. Second, a crash course in ordering apparel is outlined.

Trademark Request: Step-by-step guide

Go to https://trademarks.utexas.edu/permission-use

  1. Please use the Internal Request form found on the page: https://portal.trademarks.utexas.edu/

    1. Once you are on the page, please review all the steps under "Before submitting a new request"

    2. If you have not submitted a request before, you will need to create a profile.

      1. Under the profile, be sure to select RecSports as your department.

  2. Once you are logged in, you will go to the home page:

    1. Click Submit a New Request found near the top of the page, or on the right side bar.

        1. If selecting "Custom Vendor" - you will need to enter more information

      8. General Comments - Put your Sport Club name and purpose

        1. For example, "shirts will be used as Texas Lacrosse club warm-up shirts."

How to Order Apparel

1.Determine what it is that your club wants to order.

  • Soft goods

    • Competitive uniforms/jerseys

    • Practice apparel (shirts, shorts, pinnies)

    • Shoes/cleats/turfs

  • Hard goods

    • Sports equipment (balls, cones, bags/storage, etc.)

  • Fundraising

    • Team shop

    • Standard apparel

2.Determine overall aesthetics to get started on pricing

  • Colors

  • Sizes

  • Style #s (or specific items like a 50/50 blended shirt)

  • Decoration (front/back/sleeves, screenprint/embroidery/sublimated, single/multi color)

3.Design the apparel following UT trademark policies.

  • Do not alter Longhorn silhouette.

  • Any use of burnt orange, “UT”, “Longhorn”, etc., even your sport club organization name, must be approved by UT Trademarks.

4.Find a licensed vendor that can screenprint/embroidery UT trademarks (see above).

  • Contact sales rep for a licensed vendor to request a price quote. We most often work with BSN Sports and Austin Screen Printing, but any of the licensed vendors may assist.

5.Submit the UT trademark request (link) and submit the RecSports purchase request (link).

  • Must receive approval from both Trademarks and RecSports before confirming your order with your sales rep.

  • Once trademarks are approved, the licensed vendor will automatically receive an email of your submission.

Royalties Policy

When trying to determine if your Trademark request will be charged royalty fees, these two criteria will be used by the University:

  1. Is the product being given away?

  2. Are university funds being used to purchase?

If the order meets BOTH criteria, then the royalties would be exempt.
