Apple Mac instructions - RDP access using VPN & Duo Security
- Before leaving the office for the day, locate the host name and IP address of your work computer.
- Hostname: Go to Start, find “Computer”, right click and choose properties from the fly out. Take note of the “Full computer name” including ”.austin.utexas.edu”.
- IP Adress: Go to https://www.whatismyip.com/ and take note of your current IP address (e.g. 128.83.40.147). You will need this information in order to connect to this computer from home.
- When at home, install the VPN client.
NOTE: This step requires that you are already enrolled in Duo Security. If you have not done so yet, you need to enroll at https://utdirect.utexas.edu/apps/duo/register/duo_login/?next=/apps/duo/register/
- Install UT VPN by visiting https://vpn.utexas.edu and login with your EID and password. If automatic installation fails, click on the “Mac OS X” installation. After the download finishes, find the anyconnectXXXX.dmg file in your downloads folder and run the installer. (your Mac OS version may differ from the one listed in the picture below).
- Once the installer launches, click on Continue.
- Click on Continue.
- Click on Agree to agree to the License Agreement terms.
- Click on install. You should not need to change the install location.
- Click on Yes. The VPN client will then install.
NOTE: You may be required to enter your Username and Password. - Click on Close and you are done install the VPN client.
- Install UT VPN by visiting https://vpn.utexas.edu and login with your EID and password. If automatic installation fails, click on the “Mac OS X” installation. After the download finishes, find the anyconnectXXXX.dmg file in your downloads folder and run the installer. (your Mac OS version may differ from the one listed in the picture below).
- Launch Cisco VPN connection
You can find your VPN connection in the Launchpad
Then click on
to launch it
OR browse to Macintosh HD/Applications/Cisco/Cisco AnyConnect Secure Mobility Client.
Once launched, you will need to populate the Connect field by entering “vpn.utexas.edu”, then click Connect.
Logging in to the VPN
- For Username, enter “your EID@vpn-cfordp”
- For Password, enter your EID password.
For Second Password (this is the Duo Security field), read the Connection Banner section and type in the method you prefer
NOTE: The LAN team prefers the “phone (Send a call to your registered phone number)” method.
- Download, install, and launch Remote Desktop Connection.
Download “Remote Desktop Connection” from the App Store.
Open “Microsoft Remote Desktop” from the Launchpad (or from the Applications folder on the Macintosh HD). This is what the icon looks like:
After Remote Desktop launches, click “New” to configure a new connection profile.
- For “Connection name”, type a name of your choosing
- For “PC name”, type in your host name or IP address
- Under Credentials, Enter “austin\Your EID” for the username and your EID password. You can leave all other settings alone. Close the connection window by clicking the red circle with an X at the top right of the screen.
- Locate your newly added connection under “My Desktops” and double click it.
- For “Verify Certificate”, click on Continue.
- Click OK on the “Financial Affairs – Information” screen, and you will then be logged into your work computer and ready to work!
- When done with your session, close Microsoft Remote Desktop and disconnect from the VPN.
To disconnect Microsoft Remote Desktop, click on the red circle with an X located at the top left of your screen.
To disconnect the VPN, right click the AnyConnect icon (it looks like this)
Then click on “VPN disconnect”.
