Pro Tools - How to Record Foley and or ADR in CMB 2.124 A/B
Plug in mic or put your checked out mic on a mic stand and setup to prepare for recording |

Headphones can be found in the headphone drawer in the mix suite CMB 2.124A

Plug them into the Snake output 3 or 4 |
|
Plug mic into input 1 on the snake |
|
Check the talk-back speaker in the Foley room (Located above the window dividing the foley room with the control room) Make sure it is on there are volume knobs on the back of it but it should be getting good volume |

Talk - Back Mic Setup
Check the talk-back mic to talk to talent in the Foley space |
|
Make sure that the talkback mic is in Talk middle selection |
|
To talk to the talent hold two fingers on the touch pad of the mic and the mic will turn red signaling that it has connectivity with the Foley booth and then talk into the mic to speak to the talent. Might need to turn up speaker in the Foley room if level is too low. | |
Setup the Talk - Back Mic Preamp/Processor >will adjust the Talk-Back Mic levels in the talents headphones |

The preamp section will adjust the input levels of the voice coming in to the talk-back mic
Make sure to set about 45 and that the phantom power 48V is pushed in. |

This knob Talk - Vol will adjust the volume out of the Talk-Back Mic to the talents headphones
Use both until the talent is happy with the volume of your voice talking into the Talk-Back Mic |

Headphone Amp Setup
Headphones volume for control room ProTools Out will play into the headphones already connected to Channel #8 |
|
Headphones volume for the headphones connected to the Foley Snake in the foley room is controlled using the Output knob on Channel #3 and 4 |
|
Restart the computer - Recommended! Click on the power icon in the top Right corner, then select "Restart" from the dropdown menu |
|
Helpful to add the Macintosh HD and Storage Volumes to the Finder Sidebar Click on Finder in the Dock |
|
Go to >Finder>Settings |
|
Check the Comm-A Computer Hard disks and External disks Check boxes |
|
Open >Applications>RedNet Control 2 |
|
Close this window do not need to go through the set up wizard. |
|
Next go to >File >Session Load |
|
Click on No here Allow 3 Times to access files
Navigate to >Macintosh HD>Users>Shared> |
|
Open the Templates Do Not Erase folder |
|
Open the CMB2 Snapshot 241021
The Red 8 Line I/O control will open the appropriate settings for the Foley session |

Next Open ProTools |
|
Click OK here |
|
Click Allow here |
|
Click Next here |
|
Choose the Red 8Line as the Playback Engine
Click OK |
|
When ProTools Opens click on CANCEL don’t setup a new session we are going to do additional I/O setup FIRST |
|
Go to >Setup>I/O |
|
Click on Apply to all tabs check box Then click on Import Settings
|
|
Navigate to >Macintosh HD>Users>Shared>Templates Do Not Erase Select CMB 2 Foley io.pio >Click Open |
|
Choose Yes to Replace existing busses |
|
The correct I/O Setup will open and this is how the input should look >Input I/O Tab
Note if the settings don’t match make sure you had “Apply To All Tabs” checked

Press OK to close |

Then in the same folder Macintosh HD>Users>Shared (Templates Do Not Erase) double click CMB 2 Foley.ptxt to open the session template |

Name your session |
|
File Type .Wav Sample Rate 48KHz Bit Depth 24 Settings Last Used
Location save to your hard drive or wherever location you choose and make sure your remember where you saved your session.There is local Storage in the suite you can use called ProTools Foley Suite Workdrive
Then Click on Create |

Choose to enable the Video Engine Click Yes |
|
Once the session opens import your video clip
>File>Import>Video |
|
Navigate to the video clip and choose Open |
|
Choose the Main Video Track as the Destination
Location Session Start
Check the box to Import audio from file and click OK |
|
Click okay to import the audio and save it to the default location |
|
You should see the Video Clip you just imported on the big Sony TV in the mix room. If you do not see any video then check to see if the BlackMagic Ultrastudio is connected. Go to Macintosh HD>Applications>Blackmagic Desktop Video open Desktop Video Setup and you should see

open Desktop Video Setup and you should see the UltraStudio 4K Mini connected
If you do not then try restarting the computer after saving your work in ProTools |
|
When the audio for the video file imports make sure the audio is moved over to the GUIDE Track in the session as shown
Note the Guide Track is STEREO so if your audio is Mono then Right click the Guide Track and choose >Split To Mono |

Note if the Guide track audio levels are too high or low adjust them on the track so that they match the REF level in the room IOW play the guide track at REF and adjust the volume on the track in ProTools Click on GUIDE Vol |
|
Once you click Vol the slider will come up for you to adjust |
|
Expand the guide track so you can see the sends |
|
The sends on the guide track are sending out to the talk-back speaker and the headphones
Command click the sends to talk-back or to headphones to toggle them off and on.

Blue = Muted Not sending out sound to talk-back and headphones |
|
Grey = On un-muted sending out sound to talk-back and headphones

To start recording - select the record track REC input - Press the Green I to enable the TrackInput Monitor
|

Set the input source >choose >Interface>Input 1 (Mono) for the mic that is plugged into the Snake input 1 |
|
Make sure to press in the 48v button to turn on phantom power on CHANNEL 1 of the mic PreAmp in the rack
You will adjust the red GAIN knob for input recording levels to ProTools | |
Right click the record button in the transport window and choose QuickPunch |
|
Select the part of the session you would like to record |
|
Once Levels are set press the Red Record Enable button on the REC track |
|
Then press record hit play on the transport window to start recording |
|
When finished recording the session Go to File >Save session Then Quit ProTools and copy the session and recorded audio files to box or make sure they are on your hard drive to take with you for editing or mixing. |

Turn System off when finished |
