Certificates are only available to UT faculty and staff, and are provided at no cost to the user.

This procedure requires a connection to the campus network. If connecting from off campus, establish a VPN connection.  If you need help connecting to the UT Austin VPN please visit the following page for more information: Virtual Private Network (VPN) (Self-Help)

Requesting a certificate

Ensure that you are connected to the campus network or connected via a VPN connection to the campus network.

Visit:

At the login screen, please use your UT EID credentials to log in.

Click the Request a new certificate button.

Follow the directions on the page regarding entering your email address and requesting the certificate.

There are THREE choices:

  1. A button to quickly request a personal client certificate for your _____@austin.utexas.edu email address.

  2. A option to request a personal client certificate for one of the following affiliated domain addresses:

    • utexas.edu

    • uiltexas.org

    • wildflower.org

    • kut.org

    • starkcenter.org

    • blantonmuseum.org

    • cccse.org

  3. A option to request a personal client certificate for an affiliated sub-domain address.

Select an option, enter the request information, and click “request this address” button for the appropriate row.

When the certificate generation is complete, you will see the message to the right. You will be presented with a link to a Stache entry, and the name of Stache entry.

Click the Stache link to retrieve your certificate.

 

Downloading the Certificate

Either:

  • Click the “Stache” link above or

  • Log into Stache, and locate the entry indicated above.

This will require that you log into Stache using your UT EID credentials.

Within the Stache entry, locate the “Download” button and click it. This will download a file with a *.p12 extension.

The file contains both the private and public keys. Keep this file safe and DO NOT share it with others. Once installed, your mail program will automatically share the public key with room you send a signed or encrypted email.

 

It is highly recommended that you delete the *.p12 file from your computer once it has been successfully imported.
You can always download it again from Stache.

Click the black box “Encrypted file password”. This will expose the password you need to import the certificate into your computer or mail program.
