Overview of Requirements

Requirements for all doctoral students include successfully completing or passing the following:

  • Required coursework
  • EDP Qualifying Process document and exam
  • Dissertation Proposal
  • Any additional program area-specific requirements 
  • The disser­tation and final oral exam (dissertation defense)

Process Summary

  1. Complete all required pre-Qualifying Process coursework/requirements
  2. Initiate Qualifying Process (select QP advisor, submit QP document, complete QP exam) 
  3. Pass the EDP Qualifying Process
  4. Complete all required pre-candidacy coursework and any area-specific pre-candidacy requirements (e.g. specialized competency)
  5. Select Dissertation committee supervisor
  6. Select remaining Dissertation committee members
  7. In semester applying for candidacy: register for EDP 394R Research (placeholder for Dissertation hours)
  8. Complete Graduate School's online Application for Candidacy
  9. Candidacy Application approved by Graduate School
  10. EDP 394R Research changed to EDP 399W Dissertation
  11. Complete Dissertation Proposal
  12. Dissertation Proposal Meeting
  13. Proposal approved
  14. Obtain Institutional Review Board (IRB) approval (unless already obtained)
  15. Conduct study, analyze data, write Dissertation draft
  16. Submit final Dissertation draft to Dissertation committee members
  17. Complete any final required coursework (CP/SCCP: except for Internship)
  18. Submit Request for Final Oral (dissertation defense) to Graduate School
  19. Final Oral Exam for Dissertation
  20. Dissertation Approved
  21. CP/SCCP students - Internship
  22. Upload electronic copy of Dissertation to Graduate School, apply to graduate
  23. Graduation!
