Networking - Wired connections
Physically connecting
First contact your local IT to make sure the wall port is wired and activated. They may also need to register the device to work on the network. Make sure to give them:
The UT tag# or other description of the device being connected
The label of the wall port being used
Room # of the port
Connect the computer to the wall port ethernet cable. If you do not have a cable, your local IT can either provide one or help you procure one.
Logging into the network
Some windows computers will automatically log into the wired network using the account logged into the computer. If your computer does not connect automatically some devices will automatically detect the need to log in and you may notice a pop-up dialog prompting you to log into the network. You use your UT EID credentials to log in, not unlike on the utexas Wi-Fi network. If the computer doesn’t automatically connect and work or offer the pop-up, contact your local IT to have them register the device to work on the network.
If you move this device to a different port, you may need to have IT update the network registration
Using the network
Remotely connecting to computers on the UT wired network.
Computers on a standard UT wired connection have a firewall the blocks most inbound connections. If you need to remotely connect to those machines, please do the follwing:
For Windows Remote Desktop Protocols (RDP), use the Remote Desktop Gateway service (Using the Remote Desktop Gateway (RDG))
For SSH connections, use the SSH Gateway service (Using the SSH Gateway (SSHG))
For any other remote connections needs, contact your local IT for more bespoke options
