How to clean diamond knives before and after each use

  • Clean a razor blade using ethanol
  • With the razor blade, cut the tip of a Styrofoam stick at two 45 degree angles in order to make a wedge shape tip at the end of the stick. (Still do this step even if there is already a prepared tip, as this was used by the last person to clean his or her knife).

  •  Rinse the tip of the Styrofoam stick with ethanol
  •  While firmly holding the base of the knife holder by hand, gently and slowly swipe the very tip of the knife edge across the wedge shape Styrofoam tip from the side (without putting downward pressure). The knife edge and the wedge shape tip should be perpendicular to one another so that the knife barely slices through the pointy tip of the wedge.  Repeat this action from the opposite direction at a new location along the wedge shape tip.

  •  Blow off any excess ethanol with compressed air. Do not blow compressed air directly onto the flat surface of the knife but rather at a 45 degree angle a few inches away.

  • The knife should be ready for use. However, if you still notice dirt or spots along the knife edge, please refer to the care instructions provided by Diatome on different ways to clean the knife.

  •  Repeat these steps after you have finished using the knife.
