Types of Staff at UT:

2 Main Categories of Staff Job Classifications; in Workday, these are referred to as the "Job Family": 

  1. Classified
  2. Administrative and Professional (A&P)

In the meantime, a few useful items to know:

  • Classified and A&P staff are sometimes governed by different rule sets; for example, the performance management process for A&P is not precisely the same as for Classified staff. However, both classified and A&P employees are required to record and submit timesheets, and both sets of employees are required to have annual performance appraisals.
  • A&P staff are (almost?) always FLSA Exempt, whereas the Classified Job Family has both Exempt and Non-Exempt job profiles.
  • In Workday, some A&P positions follow Academic HR routing instead of HR routing; the three A&P Job Families that fall under "Academic" are 1) Administrative & Professional - Academic (e.g., deans, some directors); 2) Administrative & Professional - Research (e.g., Research Scientist, Research Associate, etc.); and 3) Administrative & Professional - Research Fellows (e.g., research fellows, postdocs). This is because these jobs are overseen by the Provost Office and the Office of the Vice President for Research, rather than Human Resources. (See also Academic Job Families and BP Routing WPO.)
  • Sometimes faculty are appointed and paid in A&P positions, such as a provost; whenever a faculty member holds a paid staff job, they are required to follow the relevant staff job requirements (such as filling out timesheets).
