About

Electronics Lab 2 (E2) is predominantly used for soldering and desoldering surface mount devices. Surface mounted technology is a method in which the electrical components are mounted directly onto the surface of a printed circuit board (PCB). An electrical component mounted in this manner is referred to as a surface-mount device (SMD).   If you need to do some basic soldering with thru-hole components or wires, please see the E1 page for equipment related to thru-hole soldering.

You must get E2 training to use any of the machines in this lab. You must be E1 trained before you are E2 trained.

Please sign up for E2 training on SafetySpot with your UT EID here.

Aoyue Int866 Rework Station Training Required

About

This rework station consists of three components:

  1. Soldering Iron

  2. Hot Air Gun

  3. Preheater

This station is useful for desoldering and resoldering, fixing cold joints, and salvaging components with a large number of pins.

Access

Anybody with E2 Training can use this device. There are 4 stations available for use. This rework station consists of three components:

Cost

This machine is free to use. Solder, solder wick, and tweezers are available for checkout in the E2 toolbox at the Garage.

Warnings

  • This station has an auto-sleep feature. See manual to activate and deactivate.

  • Always tin the tip to prevent oxidation and reduced heat conductivity. Video

  • Hot air may damage components or plastic parts (e.g. headers). Keep the hot air gun moving to prevent excessive heating.

  • When using the hot air gun, start at a low air flow to prevent flying components.

  • If you see black goo appear with a horrendous smell, STOP. This is likely the glue that connects the copper to FR4 laminate. Do not heat one area for too long.
