Installing Printers on macOS [draft]
DSS can install printers on macOS devices using various processes.
macOS computers managed by LAITS and enrolled in Jamf will automatically have their printers installed once-per-month when they check-in with Jamf.
Installing Printers via UT Self Service
Users can manually install their departmental printers through the UT Self Service app, via the items available to them under the "Printers" category.
Installing Printers via System Preferences | “Advanced Method #1”
If installation via Jamf or UT Self Service is not working properly, you can manually add the printer via System Preferences.
If you are installing a printer using this method due to a macOS alert regarding "missing software" for a printer, you should delete any existing drivers for the printer first.
Identify which printer to install, noting its make and model, queue name, and location
Refer to the LAITS Customer Printers REDCap page.
Download and install the appropriate drivers for the printer make and model from the manufacturer website.
Open System Preferences and click Printers & Scanners.
Click the + icon at the bottom of the left-hand pane to begin adding a printer.
In the Add dialog, click Advanced.
If you do not see the Advanced option, right-click the toolbar and select Customize Toolbar... and drag-and-drop the Advanced icon onto the blank space in the toolbar.
Under Advanced, edit the options as follows:
Type: LPD/LPR Host or Printer
Device: Another Device
URL:
lpd://print.laits.utexas.edu/<Queue-Name>
, where<Queue-Name>
is the name of the desired printer queue, e.g., LAITS-MEZ2302-BW-StaffName:
<Queue-Name> (Local)
, e.g., LAITS-MEZ2302-BW-Staff (Local)"(Local)" will differentiate this printer from any other printers that were added automatically
Location:
<Location>
, e.g., MEZ 2.302
