Updating Contact and Bank Details

Students should make sure the graduate coordinator has their current email address, and all contact information is up-to-date in the UT Directory: https://utdirect.utexas.edu/apps/utd/all_my_addresses/ (or visit https://utdirect.utexas.edu/ and search for “All My Addresses”)

For nonpayroll payments, including fellowship payments, refunds, and reimbursements, complete the Electronic Funds Transfer (EFT) section using: https://utdirect.utexas.edu/acct/rec/weft/webEFT_info.WBX

Establish or update direct deposit information for payroll payments, including GRA and TA stipends, using: https://utdirect.utexas.edu/payroll/po8/payroll_info.WBX You will only be able to access this website after you have an active employee assignment.

Note: Access requires an upgraded UT EID (i.e., The University of Texas at Austin has been presented with physical proof of an individual's identity such as a driver's license or passport). For more information on upgrading your UT EID, see UT EID Self-Service Tools: https://idmanager.its.utexas.edu/eid_self_help/

Transportation and Parking

Students ride free on all Capitol Metro Buses, UT shuttle buses, MetroRapid, and Light Rail with a student ID card. The shuttle bus service covers campus and many parts of Austin, including the Pickle Research Center. Maps, timetables and travel planner available at http://www.capmetro.org/

The bus timetable is also linked to the bus stop icons in GoogleMaps  https://www.google.com/maps/ and to the GoogleMaps route-planner, and the Transit App http://transitapp.com/ has live arrival times, route maps and a journey planner on a platform that is more stable than the CapMetro App.

Parking is very limited at UT Austin. All registered students are eligible to purchase a ‘C’ hangtag permit. Registered graduate students who are employed by UT for at least twenty hours per week (GRAs, TAs, and some fellowship holders) may request an ‘A’ hangtag permit. The graduate coordinator sends in a parking verification form to the parking office in late August. If you believe you qualify for ‘A’ parking and the parking office does not have your name, contact the graduate coordinator. For more information on eligibility, fees, location of the parking lots, or other information on parking, contact Parking at 471-7275, or visit:

http://www.utexas.edu/parking/. You may also complete an application to receive ‘A’ parking on the web.

Taxes

Fellowship stipends are taxable and recipients must arrange to pay their taxes quarterly since their stipends are not subject to withholding tax.  The proper tax form is the 1040-ES/V, which can be downloaded from the IRS web page (www.irs.gov).

GRA/TA/AI payments will have taxes deducted automatically.

Tax services for international students are available starting in early March from ISSS. They have online resources, phone services and in-person appointments for non-resident aliens. More information can be found on the tax section of the ISSS website: https://world.utexas.edu/isss/tax

Community Tax Centers http://foundcom.org/financial-stability/austin-tax-preparation/ is a resource for citizens and resident aliens. They provide financial coaching, FASFAs, and help with tax returns for those with household income is less than $50,000 per year.

Tax Withholding for International Student Employees (GRA or TA)

International students will need to file a paper W-4 for tax withholding, rather than the online W-4 in their Paycheck Profile.

They should receive login instructions within the first two weeks of employment, to access GLACIER (an online tax program). This message will come via the UT Secure message System https://utdirect.utexas.edu/webapps/e-comm/secure/inbox.jsp

GLACIER generates a W-4 and the student takes the W-4 and supporting documents to the Payroll office in MAI 134 so it can be applied to their paychecks.
