Getting Started

In the CAEE Learning Resource Center

http://www.caee.utexas.edu/students/itss

LRC: ECJ 2.206                       CSE AppD Service                   MS Azure Virtual Desktop

All physical labs will be locked for the Fall 2020 semester. They will only be available virtually.

Where can I get a UT email address?

UTmail, https://get.utmail.utexas.edu/, provides UT Austin students and alumni with a university affiliated e-mail address at no cost in the @utexas.edu domain. Those who opt-in to the service can choose their e-mail address and have 30+ GB of e-mail storage. In addition, UTMail provides e-mail for life.

Who is eligible to use the labs and virtual desktops?

The LRC is open to all Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering students, faculty, and staff, as well as students currently enrolled in any CAEE course.

How do I get a User Account?

Since the LRC computers are in the AUSTIN domain, you’ll use your UTEID to log in.  As long as you are registered for the semester no additional action is required on your part to be able to use the computers in the CAEE LRC.

Is there a server I can use to save my files?

Four GBs of disk storage is available to all students on AUSTIN DISK, austin.utexas.edu. A home directory with 4 GB disk quota for file storage is automatically be created for you on \\austin.utexas.edu\disk\engrstu\CAEE\your_eid.  Instruction on how to access this location can be found at https://it.utexas.edu/services/  > Storage > Austin Disk > Getting Started.

*** Any files located on the Desktop or My Documents will be deleted when you log off ***

Don't forget to log off when you're finished working.

Are there other options for storing my files?

Box cloud storage is a campus-wide service that allows faculty, staff and students at the University of Texas at Austin unlimited use of Box cloud-based file sharing for academic and business use.  Go to https://utexas.box.com to get your UTBox account.

***** CAEE TA’s and graders:  I want to take this opportunity to inform you that if you use your personal computer/laptop as part of your TA/grader job duties, you should not keep any confidential student information such as grades on it.  *****

Can I access the lab after hours?

All physical labs will be locked for the Fall 2020 semester. They will only be available virtually.

How can I print?

8.5 x 11 black/white laser printing and plotting are available from all the workstations and virtual desktop environments.  Each student receives a printing quota of $25 each semester.  Regular black/white laser printing costs .06 per page. Color laser printing is not available under this quota system. The printers located in the LRC are automatically configured for all users so in most cases you do not need to add a printer.

UTPrint: An ITS black/white and color printer is available on the 2nd floor of ECJ once you run out of your allocated print quota.  “Bevobucks” (http://bevobucks.utexas.edu/) are required to use these printers.  Printing costs are a bit higher than the LRC printers.

What software is available in the lab?

Microsoft Office 2019, AutoCAD 2021, Revit 2021, ArcGIS Pro, Adobe Acrobat, and Matlab 2020 are just a few of the applications installed on the lab machines.  A complete list can be viewed on the LRC website.

Under the TAH Matlab Student license all current students are licensed to install on their personally-owned computers, the same set of products available faculty and academic staff. Students can find detailed instructions for getting TAH Student software at https://it.utexas.edu/services/  > Software Services > Matlab.

Free Autodesk products such as AutoCAD and Revit and ESRI ArcGIS are also available for students to install on their personally owned computers.

Visit https://www.autodesk.com/education/edu-software/overview for Autodesk products.

Visit https://wikis.utexas.edu/display/LAITS/ESRI+ArcGIS+-+FAQ for ESRI products.

Microsoft Office 2019 can be downloaded for free from the Office 365 Portal – https://office365.austin.utexas.edu.  Keep in mind that it will stop working when you are no longer a UT student.

Can access the programs available in the LRC remotely?

The CAEE department in collaboration with the Cockrell School of Engineering and other engineering departments offers an Application Delivery (AppD) service that allows students and faculty 24/7 access to LRC software through AppD's virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI). By installing a client on your machine (Windows, Mac, Linux), you will be able to access LRC software with your web browser. Detailed instructions on how to access this service can be found at http://www.caee.utexas.edu/students/itss/43-students/it/386-virtualdesktops.

The CAEE is also offering a new Microsoft Azure Windows Virtual Desktop service, Installation instructions and the client downloads are available at:
