The Wild Wild West mechanism (Figure 1) is a model from the book Karakuri by Keisuke Saka. Using the book, I created the model using stiff paper and glue. The input is a rotational input from the user and the output is the rotation of a large disc that moves a train. The purpose of the mechanism is to change the plane of rotation such that the input motion is easier for the user to apply. Additionally, it increases the speed of the output – the train moves faster than the user’s hand.
