ABOUT EDC 364C: Fieldwork in Youth and Community Studies

EDC 364C: Fieldwork in Youth and Community Studies is devoted to providing students with opportunities to gain valuable, real-world experiences relevant to their Youth and Community Studies professional concentration (e.g., coaching, early childhood, special populations, youth and social services) and/or your Minor and Certificate Programs:  https://catalog.utexas.edu/undergraduate/the-university/minor-and-certificate-programs/.

Community Studies and Higher Education students complete a 135-hour internship (10-15 hours per week) over the course of the semester, with a minimum of 14 weeks at their site.  Enrollment in this course means you have been approved to earn fieldwork credit by working at an off-campus agency and in-person. You must register for this class for a letter grade; pass/fail is not an option. UT Urban Teachers complete Student Teaching.

Your internship must address the the values set forth by the College of Education: https://education.utexas.edu/about/diversity.

The class meets in person. You are required to attend weekly class sessions at UT, Tuesdays, 4-7PM.

Your internship can entail some remote work. However, expect to complete most (80%) of your internship hours in person, at your off-campus site.

INTERNSHIP PROCESS

In order to register for EDC 364C, you must fulfill several administrative requirements during the semester  BEFORE  you plan to take the course and intern.  This process should begin well before the advising and registration periods.

Steps

Procedures

Step 1

Attend one of the required information sessions for EDC364C: Fieldwork in Youth and Community Studies

Designed to familiarize you with the process and expectations for your internship, you will learn about the internship process and how to secure an internship site.

Step 2

Secure Proof of Academic Eligibility (in writing)

The internship course is the last class you take in the program. First step: schedule an in-person meeting with your Academic Advisor to confirm you meet the minimum requirements.

You must have:

  • At least a 2.5 GPA with upper division standing, and;

  • No more than 6 total hours remaining of required Youth and Community Studies major classes. You can have courses in other areas, but only 6 credits remaining in YCS. You may take up to 12 credit hours in your final YCS semester without needing to appeal.

Your Academic Advisor will complete and sign the "Internship Eligibility Form" and email it to Dr. Hernandez (v2_2022_Internship Form.docx). The Academic Advisor's signature on the form indicates that you meet the necessary academic eligibility to take EDC 364C: Fieldwork in Youth and Community Studies.

Step 3

Secure Approved Internship Site

It is the student's responsibility to secure their own internship, paid or unpaid, that aligns with their YCS concentration. Students are expected to identify possible sites, prepare a cover letter, resume, and set-up their own interviews. Information about possible internship sites can be found by visiting the Youth and Community Studies website for a list of approved internship sites (refer to left column Page Tree and click on Approved Sites and Internship Resources), attending job fairs, and visiting the Career Services Center.

Once you have secured an Internship, schedule a one-on-one meeting with Dr. Hernandez to complete necessary paperwork.

You must have the following information:

  1. Organization’s physical address (PO Boxes not Accepted)
