VMWare by Broadcom (broadcom.com) is a service through which McCombs School of Business faculty and students can run a Windows virtual machine on a Macintosh computer. There is no cost to download and use the software for personal use, but faculty and researchers who are using it for commercial use must request a license

This article will cover the installation of VMWare on both Intel and Apple Silicon Macs. The first section is on downloading and installing VMWare, and the second section is on adding a Windows VM to your newly-installed app.

Please note: If you had VMWare before August 2024, you were part of a different licensing system. To update, please uninstall the application, delete your license (instructions here), and then follow the instructions on this wiki page.

Prior to installing, make sure you have:

  • Have ~30 GB of free space
  • Have ~45 minutes for complete installation

Installing VMWare:

Using the VMWare Academic Software Licensing Program hosted at DTL Brightspace.com, faculty and students at the McCombs School of Business can download VMWare Fusion at to run a Windows VM on a Macintosh computer. There is no cost to download and use this software, but it's license must be renewed by you each year. You will not be able to renew your license once you are no longer a student or faculty member.

To request access to this program please follow the steps below

  1. Submit a ticket at https://www.mccombs.utexas.edu/tech requesting access. Please tell us the university email address you wish to use as your logon for the program.
  2. Once we register your email address, you will receive an email message from info@itacademy.brightspace.com similar to the one below that invites you to the program.

  3. Click the link in the email to register for the program. This will take you to the main login page. Click the "Click here" button to register

  4. At the next page, since this is your first time accessing the program click the "Register" button. (In the future after registering you can use the "Log In" button)

  5. The next page will ask you to confirm your email address, set a password, and create your account.

  6. Once the registration is completed, you will then be allowed to access the program web pages. Click the link provided to access the program.

  7. In the future, anytime you need to access the program just go directly to https://itacademy.vmware.com to login with the email and password you registered with the program. McCombs IT staff do not have the ability to access or reset your password. If you forget your password, please use the "Forgot your password?"  link on the login page.

  8. IMPORTANT: You must request a license key to use this software. The itacademy.brightspace.com page has a dropdown called “Get VMWare Software & Licenses” at the top left. Select this and choose “Request Software License Keys (for individuals)”.

  9. To request a license key, press “Request” under “VMWare Fusion 13.x Pro”.

    You will receive another email from VMWare with the license key within 12 hours.

  10. To download VMWare Fusion, please visit this link https://utexas.box.com/s/figyn36ka76x0al0xhcxznrytjr8pm6d and click “Download”.
  11. Open your Finder and navigate to the downloads folder
  12. Double click the VMWare-fusion.dmg
  13. Double click the VMWare icon that pops up
  14. You will get a warning click open

15.You will then be presented with a box to paste the License Key that you were sent

  1. Go to access.broadcom.com. On the upper right, click on "Login" and select "Register".

  2. Register with the email address you would like to use for your Broadcom account. This can be any email address that you can access.
  3. Enter the verification code that you receive at that email. 
  4. Please complete registration with your full name, country, and password (you can put whatever you would like for "job title"). Please note that we do not have access to reset your password.
  5. On the "Build my Profile" page, click "I'll do it later".

  6. Please visit this link to download VMWare: https://support.broadcom.com/group/ecx/productdownloads?subfamily=VMware+Fusion. It should say that you will be redirected. Click "Next". 
  7. Enter the email you used to register, click "Remember me", and click "Next". Now, enter the password you created.

  8. You should be taken to your dashboard (below). If you are not, try going to the link again: https://support.broadcom.com/group/ecx/productdownloads?subfamily=VMware+Fusion.

  9. Select "VMWare Fusion 13 Pro for Personal Use" and click the link to download the latest version.

  10. You must check "I agree to the terms and conditions" before you will be able to click the cloud icon. Click the cloud to download the installer.

  11. A pop-up will appear, asking for additional verification. Click "yes". It will take you to a page where it asks you for some more information. You may enter your own address, or McCombs' address (below).

  12. Click on the cloud icon to download the installer.

  13. Open Finder, navigate to your "Downloads" folder, and double-click the ".dmg" file that just installed.
  14. Double-click the VMWare icon that pops up. You may see a warning. Click "Open".

  15. Click through the installation. You may be presented with an Accessibility Error.
  16. Click "OK" then click "Open System Preferences". Your Security and Privacy Settings will pop up.

  2. You now have the VMWare Fusion application! The next step is to load Windows into the app.

Adding your Windows VM:

First, check if your Mac has an Intel or Apple Silicon chip. To find out:

  1. Go to the menu bar and select the Apple icon
  2. Select “About this Mac” from the drop-down menu
  3. Select On older MacOS, you'll need to click More info…

  1. The page should say whether your "Processor" is Intel, or an Apple (M1, M2, etc.) chip.

Windows

Download for Apple Silicon Macs:

  1. Navigate to https://utexas.app.box.com/v/msb-student-vms and download the windowsARM.vmdk

2.Open VMware

  1. Open the VMWare Fusion app.
  2. Click "Create a custom virtual machine".

4. Choose "Windows 11 64-bit ARM".

5.Auto-generate a password or enter one that you will remember and press continue.

6. Click on "Choose virtual disk".

7. Locate and select the .vmdk file you just downloaded.

8. Select finishClick "finish". Windows should now be setting up.

9. As we you cannot continue without a network connection, we you need to install the network driversImage Removed.

9. Restart the VM by selecting the button '"Virtual machine'" at the top of your screen10. Select '"Restart'".

1110. Once it has restarted, we you need to open command prompt: hold 'shift' + 'FN' + 'F10'
If the above key combination doesn't work please try: CONTROL + TAB and click "yes" on the window that pops offup.

12. Type OOBE\bypassnrobypassnro 
Press Enter.

13. Once the Virtual Machine (VM) restarts, you should now have an option to select virtual machine restarts, click through to the network screen and select 'I don't have internet'. You can now continue the setup process.

Once you are in Windows:

14. Open the start menuStart Menu (Windows icon). 

15. Open 'Powershell' as administrator. To run as administrator, please: right-click of your mouse, then choose Search for "PowerShell". Right-click the application, and run it as an administrator (or select "Run as administrator" on the right). 

16. Type 'Set-ExecutionPolicy RemoteSigned' then press

17.Press the 'A' key, then Enter press Enter. Close PowerShell once finished.

18.Close Powershell19. Select 'Virtual machine' at the top of the app.

Then 'reinstall VMware tools'
