Because research faculty are expected to engage with the academic enterprise, University policy caps externally-funded effort by research faculty at 95% in most situations, allowing for at least 5% effort on academic activities to be funded by internal funds. See HOP 7-1010: Research Effort Verification, section VII.4. This means that no more than 95% of a research faculty member’s salary can be funded by 26-accounts, with the remaining 5% to be funded by less restrictive, non-26-account funds. For research faculty only, IDC may be used for this 5%.

Faculty who wish to request an exception to this 95% cap may submit an Attestation for Increased Effort on Sponsored Funds request to the Office of Research Support and Compliance (ORSC) and are encouraged to consult with their research administrator before doing so.
