Research faculty vs. research staff
The key distinction between research faculty and research staff is evidence of engagement with the academic enterprise through teaching, mentorship, or supervision of students at some level. For information on research staff, see COE: Research Staff and Research Affiliates. For a comparison of research faculty, staff, and affiliate positions, see COE: Comparison of Research Positions.
Research faculty titles
See EVPP: Research Faculty Titles.

Research Associate Professor | 0027 | Research accomplishments and scholarly credentials equivalent to that of an established assistant professor or a new associate professor. The individual must have an established record as a mature, independent researcher. |
Research Assistant Professor | 0037 | Expected to show the potential to develop an independent research program that represents a significant portion of their activity and also be involved in activities traditionally thought of as professorial. |
Funding research faculty
Appointment dates
Because research faculty are expected to engage with the academic enterprise, University policy caps externally-funded effort by research faculty at 95% in most situations, allowing for at least 5% effort on academic activities to be funded by internal funds. See HOP 7-1010: Research Effort Verification, section VII.4. This means that no more than 95% of a faculty member’s salary can be funded by 26-accounts, with the remaining 5% to be funded by less restrictive, non-26-account funds. For research faculty only, IDC may be used for this 5%.
Faculty who wish to request an exception to this 95% cap may submit an Attestation for Increased Effort on Sponsored Funds request to the Office of Research Support and Compliance (ORSC) and are encouraged to consult with their research administrator before doing so.
Research faculty who teach
Per Provost’s Office guidance on academic and funding expectations for research faculty when teaching, funding will be adjusted to reflect instructional effort. See EVPP: Hiring Research Faculty > About Research Faculty Titles > Academic and Funding Expectations.
NIH salary cap
Congress legislatively mandates a limitation on salary for individuals under NIH grant and cooperative agreement awards. The mandate appears in the annual appropriation act that provides authority for NIH to incur obligations for a given fiscal year (FY). For more information, consult Salary Cap Guidance linked from HOP 7-1010: Research Effort Verification, section VIII. Forms & Tools. Annual salary cap amounts are listed at NIH: Grants & Funding > Salary Cap Summary (FY 1990 - Present). Contact your research administrator with any questions.
