When IGRINS is stored at McDonald Observatory it is necessary to plan in advance for cooling and vacuum pumping procedures.

Scenario 1: IGRINS will be off the telescope for two weeks or less. In this case IGRINS should remain cold while being stored.

  1. After moving IGRINS to the 6th floor connect the A/B/C cables for the pressure gauge and temperature sensors.
  2. The fiber optic network cable must be connected so the instrument can be monitored remotely.
  3. Do not:
    1. Connect detector power and USB unless requested.
    2. Connect the Calibration Unit cables unless requested.
    3. Press the power button on the three black Windows computers in the electronics cabinet.
  4. The Lakeshore heaters should be set to normal operating temperatures.
  5.  Note:
    1. Large jolts and impacts can harm the optics and the detectors are sensitive to power fluctuations.
    2. As part of Fduty please ensure that heaters are operating normally, that the dewar pressure is lower than 1E-7 torr, and that the CTI Coldhead is making the appropriate maraca noises.

Scenario 2: IGRINS will be off the telescope for more than two weeks and will have the vacuum refreshed.

  1. It will take IGRINS ~2 days to warm to room temperature, 3 days to pump, and another 3 days to cool back to operating temperature.
  2. After moving IGRINS to the 6th floor connect the A/B/C cables for the pressure gauge and temperature sensors.
  3. The fiber optic network cable must be connected so the instrument can be monitored remotely.
  4. Do not:
    1. Connect detector power and USB unless requested.
    2. Connect the Calibration Unit cables unless requested.
    3. Press the power button on the three black Windows computers in the electronics cabinet.
  5. Read the Vacuum Refresh Procedure before starting this process.
  6. Note:
    1. While warm, IGRINS detectors are at risk of deteriorating when exposed to temperatures above 100F. The refrigerated dome is safe, but outside is not.
    2. As part of Fduty please ensure that the Lakeshore heaters are set to normal operating temperatures, that the dewar pressure is lower than 1E-7 torr, and that the CTI Coldhead is making the appropriate maraca noises.
