Getting Started
Welcome to the Group! Here's how to get going...
IDs and Transportation
Get an ID card with the HID chip (proximity chip) at Flawn Academic Center
Get a parking pass
Any parking pass should be okay for Pickle
Make sure to register your license plate in the parking permit portal
Bus Route 803 (a metrorapid route) also runs between campus and Pickle.
Students with a UT ID Card can use the bus (just a swipe on the card reader)
Travel time will be 5-10 minutes longer
Generally reliable. Use the CapMetro app for best bus stop time estimates etc
Get access to cleanroom/labs
Contact mertrain@mer.utexas.edu for MER Safety Training
You can also try williamveith@utexas.edu
You should also request afterhours keycard access to MRC

Training
Get safety training: https://ehs.utexas.edu/training/training-courses.php#oh101
X-ray safety (306) is probably the most important to get first, followed by lab safety, etc.
OH 101, 201, 202, 304, 306; maybe 204
If you will be doing cleanroom/fabrication work, start getting trained. Most tool training can be requested throughout the year, but the sooner you get some done the better
Some tools to consider getting first:
Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM), Xray Diffraction (XRD), Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM), solvent hoods in photolithography bay
XRD training is usually handled by a group member
SEM training can be a bit difficult
First ask group members to see if you can shadows them while they use the tool first
Send a request to mertrain@mer.utexas.edu
In your subject line include the tool name
In the email include:
Group name/PI
Purpose of request (i.e. why you need the tool)
Availability (give specific days and times, this will help schedule it faster)
Different tools require different training, always ask before using
