Regenerative Braking (Regen Brake)

Regenerative Braking (Regen Brake)

History

The 2024 Solar Car, Daybreak was going to have regen integrated. However, regen was not tested with high voltage prior to competition. So regen has only been theorized thus far and not implemented and tested.

Having regenerative braking would be advantageous for the American Solar Challenge because it’s a method to turn the otherwise lost energy from mechanical braking to charging the battery over long distances.

How to Implement

Controls - manage the motor controller, internal code for regen, SOC protection.

BPS - disallow regen to occur when battery is (1) overcharged (2) too hot

Dynamics - mounting the motor on the rear wheel of next-gen car

Emech -

Ergo - Paddle gear shift

@Sid Babu: the car should take whatever action necessary to protect itself and the driver autonomously as needed. The key is that this behavior is known and its effects are predictable to the driver. This forms the basis of driver confidence and safety. if a certain sound tone goes off, the exact same thing should happen every time (as close as you can get it).

TLDR: it’s fine to do changes autonomously, but I’d be suspicious of a visual only cue, I’d recommend an auditory component as a second signal. Additionally, I’d stay away from variable changes. Something like “if the tone goes off, regen always shuts down completely” is more predictable than “if the tone goes off regen sort of changes down a bit somewhere”.

We shouldn’t go off tone, maybe a visual queue would be better.

Hyundais system just splits it into three (or four I can’t remember) levels + zero regen, so in software it could be a coefficient array with 0, 0.25, 0.5, 0.75, 1

Questions to answer

  • calc for regen braking justification: Is regen worth it? For what weights

  • barred during charging…?: when do we stop charging, at what points (ex going down hill)

  • concerns with overcharging?

@Aiden Madaffri Notes:

  • Regen should not be used at low speed (<15mph). Is this number justified?

  • Regen is a feature baked into our motor controllers, I think we should test this practically with the dyno that Arnav/Jiwoo is working on. Dyno is on hold.
