 Brent Clay Extruder:

Steps:

  1. Choose the die you will be using and place it in the end cap.

  2. Secure the end cap to the bottom of the barrel.

  3. Wedge your clay.

  4. Form it into a cylinder that can fit into the extruder.

  5. Wrap the cylinder in plastic
    1. Make sure there are very few wrinkles where the clay will be meeting the disk.

  6. Place the bagged cylinder into the barrel.

  7. .Lift the plunger into the barrel using the handle

  8. Shift the clutch so the nob is facing down.

  9. Lift the handle up, and the plunger will fall through the barrel until it reaches the clay.

  10. Push down on the handle evenly, not exerting too much pressure because that can cause curling.
    1. Press down a little at first and check to make sure the plastic is ripping in a way that is not altering the extruded piece. If it is, cut away any plastic that is in the way.

  11. Use a fettling knife or wire to cut off the pieces as they are extruded.

  12. When you are done extruding, shift the clutch so the nob is facing up and using the handle, lift the plunger out of the barrel.

  13. Remove the excess clay and make sure to clean any part of the extruder that is now dirty. Place the used die back in the box when cleaned.

Reclaiming Clay

Helpful Video

  1. Put all trimmings and slip into bucket marked for the correct clay body

    1. Clay that is either slip (liquid clay) or bone dry (no moisture) and in small pieces works best for reclamation.

    2. If you have large pieces of clay you want to reclaim, let them dry out completely and break them down with a hammer.

  2. Fill the bucket with water until clay is covered.

  3. Let clay sit in water for one day

  4. To remove excess water before reclaiming, hold a dry sponge to the clear water on the surface of the clay and wring it out over the drain.

  5. Mix the contents of the bucket with your hand squishing any large pieces.

  6. Pour clay onto the proper plaster bat and spread to an even layer with your hand.

  7. Let dry for 6hrs up to 2 days depending on humidity and quantity of reclaim.

  8. Adequately dried clay should cleanly lift from the plaster bat.

  9. Wedge the clay very thoroughly.

  10. Only ever use a flexible rubber rib to lift clay from the plaster bat.

  11. Clean plaster with a slightly damp sponge.
