Code of Conduct
In order to be certified to use the Design Lab, AHG studios, and AHG Wood Shop, all students must agree to our code of conduct. Users will receive the Design Lab Access code and BACS swipe access to applicable spaces after agreeing to these conditions.
Signing this agreement must be conducted with staff member in the lab, or with a faculty member whose course will be utilizing the lab. If you have questions please reach out to designlab@austin.utexas.edu
I will participate in the community of the Design Lab and all Design Department facilities in a responsible and respectful way.
I will “leave no trace” in the labs and classrooms, and always clean up after myself.
I will stay aware of the space I am occupying, and to be courteous and respectful of other lab users.
I will be respectful of the lab resources, and not waste materials, use excessive amounts of materials, or act recklessly with tools and equipment.
I will not attempt to utilize any equipment that I have not been trained by lab staff to use.
I will always approach tools and equipment with respect, and will not use them in ways other than how staff have instructed or demonstrated.
I will accept full responsibility for lab equipment and resources I borrow.
I will check my UT email regularly, because lab staff may contact me about lab matters, and staff will be sharing valuable information about access and opportunities in the labs.
I will always follow directions given to me by lab staff.
I will ask the lab staff for help when needed, and not put myself or the lab resources at risk. Lab staff are here to help me, and I will always seek support if I have questions or concerns.
I will safely try to solve a problem myself before immediately asking lab staff for help.
I will act responsibly when using the lab after hours, and I will not work alone at night, over the weekend, or during holiday breaks.
I will not share access to the lab, or to specific lab resources, with someone who is not a current Design student, or someone who has not been properly trained to access the lab. This includes sharing a door code or ID card to grant access, or leaving a door propped open after hours.
I will only utilize the lab for work related to coursework, and projects that are in pursuit of professional development.
I understand that if I am pursuing a project that is not for a current class, that staff reserve the right to deny access to resources. Staff are not responsible for helping me with my commercial endeavors, even for a UT organization, and I must provide my own consumable materials for commercial projects.
I understand that the subject-matter of the work conducted with university resources must be appropriate for the professional educational environment of the lab.
I understand that access to free printing and consumables is a unique aspect of the labs in the Design Department. I will be respectful of these privileges and never be wasteful.
I understand that lab staff may deny access to resources if they are being misused, or if policies are being ignored. Violation of this agreement could result in access to resources being revoked.
I agree to use the sign-in sheet whenever I enter the Design Lab, even outside of staffed hours, during nights and weekends
I agree to a “Three Strikes” policy, which declares that after three violations of lab rules, or of this agreement, that my access to the facilities may be revoked for the semester. I will be given two warnings by staff, with clear explanation of the violations. The third violation will result in loss of access.
