New Computer: Basics
Logging into your computer
Your username is your UT EID
Your password is your UT EID password
If you are picking up a laptop or desktop to take home or anywhere off campus, you must first log into the computer at Computer Services before taking the machine.
Operating System & Software
By default, computers are currently setup with the Windows 10 operating system and Office 2016 software.
Other software included: Adobe Reader, Box Sync, Chrome, Flash Player, Firefox, Greenshot, Java Runtime, Skype, VLC Media Player, 7-Zip, and Cisco Amp.
Software packages such as Acrobat Pro, Photoshop, Word Perfect and others must be purchased.
Installing Software (Home Users)
To install software please review: Installing Software: TXLAW Account
Machines "permanently" located at the Law School are managed by Computer Services. If software is needed, please submit a help request.
Box Sync
All users are being encouraged to use BOX and save their files to the Box Sync folder so that they are automatically backed up and synchronized with all their devices that use Box Sync. In the event that a computer is lost/stolen/fails, your files will be safely stored and accessible from another device. When you first log on shortly afterwards you will see the prompt to log into Box Sync.
For information on creating your Box account and using Box Sync please see: Box Sync Quick User Guide
VPN
The VPN (Cisco AnyConnect) is required only if you want to access the N: drive from off campus. Using the VPN now requires that you setup Two Factor Authentication. Desktops setup for use solely at the Law School will not have this software pre-installed as it is not needed for systems that remain on campus.
Note: We recommend using Box Sync as it is far easier than using the VPN to access your files.
Printing
Computers that have been configured for use on campus, such as a desktop in your office will automatically install the printers you have access to within the Law School. To select a default printer see Change Default Printer
Note: Computers configured for off-campus use, such as Laptops or Home Desktops, will not install Law School printers since those machines are rarely or never on campus. Law School printers can manually be added to a laptop, if needed please ask for that to be done.
Encryption
Your home Desktop/Laptop/Surface is encrypted using BitLocker encryption.
This method is completely transparent to you, however should you ever be prompted for your Recovery Key, you can access it from Stache.
