How to Audition for Theatre and Dance Productions as a Non-Major

Auditions for Department of Theatre and Dance shows are open to UT Austin students in any major, though Theatre and Dance majors will receive casting priority. General auditions are held in October and March for the following term (auditions in October for Spring productions; auditions in March for productions the following Fall). Information will be posted here in advance of those auditions. 

Theatre and Dance General Auditions 2026-27

General Auditions will be held Saturday, March 28th within the 10am-6pm window, with callbacks happening the week of March 30th. Audition forms and sign-ups will be posted on Monday, March 23rd after spring break.

General auditions will consist of two 1-minute contrasting monologues of your choice. One director requested a contemporary selection, and one director asked for anything but verse.

 THE MIRACULOUS JOURNEY OF EDWARD TULANE

Directed by Julia Kreutzer

We’re looking for imaginative, playful theatre-makers that can engage in a collaborative process of devising. All performers (besides the actor playing Edward) will be playing multiple roles in this performance, across vastly different archetypes. While several roles are scripted singers/ musicians, all performers should be comfortable singing and/or playing instruments.

EDWARD TULANE: The consciousness of a rabbit doll made of china; self-important, but entirely reliant on others. *plays guitar.

Traveler 1/ PELLEGRINA: Grandmother to Abilene; omniscient storyteller.

Traveler 2/ ABILENE: A young girl; posh and playful.

Traveler 3/ LAWRENCE: A fisherman; paternal and generous.

Traveler 4/ NELLIE: Lawrence’s wife; maternal and warm. *sings.

Traveler 5/ BULL: An unhoused nomad; rugged and kind.

Traveler 6/ BRYCE: A young boy; protective and loving. *plays harmonica

Traveler 7/ SARAH RUTH: A young girl; destitute and ill.

Father: Abilene’s father.

Society Lady: a fancy ship passenger.

Martin: a mischievous young ship passenger.

Amos: a mischievous young ship passenger.

Margory: a townsperson.

Lolly: Lawrence and Nellie’s daughter.

Lucy: Bull’s dog.

Jack: another unhoused nomad.

Watchman: guards the railcar.

Old Lady: an unkind and resourceful farmer. *sings.

Marlene: a waitress.

Neal: owner of the diner.

Lucius: a dollmaker.

Doll: one of Lucius’ dolls.

Old Doll: another of Lucius’ dolls.

Shopper: a woman seeking to purchase a doll.

The Nina Variations

What if you had a chance to re-do one of the most important moments of your life?

To be more specific, what if you had 43 chances?

In Anton Chekov’s The Seagull, Nina and Treplev never figured out a way to make their relationship work. In The Nina Variations, Steven Dietz gives them the chance to try again. And again. And again. Sometimes funny, sometimes gut wrenching, Nina and Treplev spend 43 scenes trying to reach each other through the mess of their past and their hope for the future.

This production will be performed in Fall 2026 in 2.180 and will cast 8 actors who will play Nina and/or Treplev.

The Visit

Synopsis

Once a thriving town, Güllen has fallen into severe economic decline. The town is on the verge of bankruptcy, and no one visits – the train doesn’t even stop there. The arrival of a very important visitor throws the town into sudden excitement. The visitor, Claire Zachanassian, is a billionaire who was born in Güllen but left many years ago. Now immensely wealthy, she returns to her hometown for the first time since her departure. The townspeople eagerly hope her visit will save their struggling community. But Claire, in turn, makes a shocking proposal: she will donate an enormous sum of money to the town, but on one condition.

The Visit is a tragic comedy that raises pressing questions about justice, revenge, and capitalism.

  • This production includes depictions of revenge, murder, contract killing, and human trafficking.

General Audition Preferences

  • A one-minute contemporary monologue. We encourage pieces that balance seriousness with humor, particularly through dark or ironic comedy.

  • Actors with experience in puppetry or live camera operation are encouraged to provide detailed information about their experience in the audition form.

  • Production meetings will begin shortly after casting is announced. At least one regular weekly meeting will be scheduled in the evenings or on weekends before summer break.
