Course Support and Instruction
Supplemental Instruction (SI) is a nationally recognized student support program designed to enhance student performance and increase retention. A partnership between Sanger and campus professors, SI targets historically difficult (high D, F, and drop-out rates) entry-level courses by offering students regularly scheduled, modified discussion sections. These discussion sections, led by Sanger-trained graduate and undergraduate students (SI leaders), are designed to help students master academic course concepts while increasing their learning strategies relevant to the course. Sanger’s SI program has two distinct purposes: in addition to providing student support, there is an emphasis on training and preparing graduate students to support student learning outcomes through effective classroom management and teaching. Support is provided to approximately 80 discussion sections (30 courses) by 70 SI leaders. Sanger staff also employ graduate-level Supplemental Instructor Supervisors (“Supers”) to oversee its Supplemental Instructors (SIs) in various departments. SI discussion sessions occur in campus classrooms reserved by leaders and program administrators at the beginning of the semester. SI sessions do not take place over the summer.
