Costume Studio Orientation Document
Studio Access & Safety
- MASKS ARE STRONGLY RECOMMENDED IN THE COSTUME SHOP AT ALL TIMES!!! (but not required)
- General studio hours are 9am-6pm M-F
- If you are working after hours, alone or with only a few other people, please lock the studio doors for safety.
- The Studio is a shared workspace for Costume shop staff and students. Classes are also held in the space.
- It is a good idea to hide or secure your valuables if left unattended. Things have gone missing in the past.
- Graduate and undergraduate costume students are assigned drawers for extra storage space.
- Last person to leave should turn off irons & lights, close doors, and lock outer doors.
- UT Tools and equipment need to stay in the costume studio
Studio Care
- This is a professional work environment. Please be conscious of the noise level you are contributing to the shop. If you want to listen to music or watch a movie, please use ear buds/headphones
- WE strongly encourage you to take an outside lunch break. We strongly recommend everyone to remain masked as much as possible in the shop. If you cannot go outside, please use trays when you eat at your table space
- Keep the sink area clean. Do your dishes, don't keep food lingering for too long, etc. Graduate student sink area is your responsibility.
- Sharps boxes are located around the shop- dispose of any broken/damaged needles, pins, razors, etc.
- Shared machines (serger, hemmer, etc.)
- keep area clean
- Report any machine or shop issues IMMEDIATELY to staff, including staff machines that you may use after hours
Sustainability Initiatives/Disposal of Items
- Fabric Scraps
- Small scraps of any material that would otherwise be thrown in the trash
- No yardage means nothing over 36"
- Specialized to our space only
- Bins found at ground level below the Thread bay
- Recycling
- Glass, aluminum, paper/cardboard, hard plastics with any # in the triangle
- A good rule to remember is, "No soft plastics, no Styrofoam, nothing smaller than your fist" in Recycling.
- Bins are found paired with Trash cans around the Studio and Winship
- Soft Plastics Recycling
- Plastic envelopes, delivery bags, grocery bags, ziplock, garment bags, plastic film
- Specialized to our space only
- Bin (large, circular grey, labeled "Plastic Only") found across the Dye Room near the Packing Area
- Compost
- Food waste, including meat/bones/dairy, paper towels/napkins, pizza boxes, compostable containers (marked with a triangle and "PLA" underneath)
- Specialized to our space only
- Small Bin located near fridge by staff offices (dumped weekly)
- Landfill
- Coated cardboard, used tissues, used masks, plastic utensils, items smaller than your fist that can't be recycled
- Bins are found paired with Recycling cans around the Studio and Winship
Studio Supplies
- Dress forms- take good care of them & report any problems
- See Dress Form Use and Care document for details
- Supply Drawers:
- Supplies are not for personal or class project use, unless it is for production
- Do not keep supplies at your table. Put things back for everyone's use
- If you cannot find something, ask a staff member
- If you use the last of something or open the last from overstock, inform a staff person IMMEDIATELY
- Fabric Stock
- If there are at least two UNCUT yards of fabric, it can be stored on a bolt.
- All fabric should be secured with ties or calamari loops.
- Smaller amounts of scrap fabric should be neatly bundled, tied off, and put in the scrap drawers.
- There is a blue basket by the double doors to put unusable/discarded scraps for recycling
- Commercial Patterns are available for use. They are located in the back hallway
Costume Labeling
- Label Guidelines & Supplies
- Printed labels, label ribbons, and oak tags are located by the trims drawers
- Dry cleaning pens are for label use only
- Use a pencil or friction pen on oak tags please!
Craft Room, Supplies, & Tools
- The craft room is not a workspace. If you need to use an item or tool that is in the room, ask permission to use the item and to get access to the space.

- Most craft supplies are located in grey cabinets in the hallway. Everything is labeled
- Some supplies and tools are locked up for safe keeping. Ask Tanya if you cannot find something you need.
Dye Room
- For your safety, Dye Room use is by appointment only.
- We can discuss if any training is needed for use of supplies and equipment
- You must have been fit tested for a respirator in order to dye or use toxic products
- Always keep the room locked
- Please clean up before you leave. Thank you.
Respirator Fit Testing
Graduate and Undergraduate Student Employees
- The Costume Shop will arrange for medical assessments and fit testing through UT’s Occupational Health Program.
- Medical evaluations are reassessed every 3 years and fit testing is repeated annually. See “Respirator Medical Assessment and Fit Testing” document for more info.
- Graduate student employees are highly advised to purchase their own respirators and cartridges
- Undergraduate student employees required to have respirators will have respirators and cartridges supplied by the department
