UT IRB Announcements:
The revised Common Rule applying to research supported by DHHS and many other federal agencies (excluding FDA and DOJ), goes into effect on January 21, 2019. This site provides an overview of the major changes and how the UT IRB will implement them. Other information on recent related regulation is also provided.
Common Rule Change Update
On April 19, 2018 the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) has proposed delaying the implementation of the final revisions to the Federal Policy for the Protection of Human Subjects (a.k.a. the Common Rule) until January 21, 2019. This proposal is currently undergoing a 30-day comment period.
New IRB Contact Number
Please contact the IRB at 512-232-1543 for assistance with IRB matters. This line will be manned by an IRB staff member daily from 9:00am – 4:00pm. Should you have a protocol specific question, please have your IRB study number handy so the staff can assist you. Please feel free to continue to email the main RSC email with questions as well.
Acknowledgement Emails
In order to connect PIs, Co-PIs and other key research personnel to the IRB staff member reviewing their protocol, the IRB staff have been instructed to send out short acknowledgement emails to the PIs once they receive the action (typically within 1-3 business days from submission). This email is intended to let researchers know who to contact with questions about specific submissions.
Recruitment Materials
In an effort to reduce burden on researchers and to increase efficiency during the approval process, the IRB will no longer place an approval stamp on recruitment materials. In order for the PI to readily ascertain which recruitment materials are approved for implementation, they can simply log in to IRBaccess, go to the Document Management page and the approved recruitment materials will have a note in the document description box denoting approval. The document description will change to “Approved [date of approval].” If you have any questions about which recruitment materials are approved, please contact the IRB staff member who reviewed the submission.
Updates to Policies and Procedures
We have made updates to our Policies and Procedures. Some of the notable modifications were made to the Noncompliance Policy and the Emergency Use Policy.
Certificates of Confidentiality
A guidance document has been created regarding NIH’s policy for Certificates of Confidentiality for NIH funded research.
Exempt Amendment Clarification
Per a previous announcement, we have modified our Exempt study submission requirements. To clarify, if modifications made to an Exempt protocol do not meet the criteria outlined here, our office does not need to be notified and an online amendment application does not need to be submitted. If you are unsure if an amendment application needs to be submitted, please feel free to contact our office for guidance.
