Parking and Housing

Parking & Transportation

The College of Education is housed in the George I. Sánchez Building (SZB) located at the intersection of Martin Luther King Blvd. and Speedway in Austin, Texas. SZB is located across from Beauford H. Jester Center (JES) and in back of the Perry-Castañeda Library (PCL).

  • Faculty, staff, and students may buy a parking permit from the Parking & Transportation Services Office. There are several permit options available, ranging from garage, surface lot, and general parking, some of which are dependent on employment or enrollment status.
  • Students and visitors may park in University garages offering hourly rates or at parking meters on campus. Privately owned pay lots and garages also are also often available around the perimeter of campus. UT Parking requires faculty, staff, and students to buy a permit to park motorcycles or mopeds on campus. Cyclists are highly encouraged to register their bicycles with the UT Police Dept. There is a limited amount of 30-minute parking available on the west side of the Sanchez Building as well.
  • State Disabled Parking Permits are honored on campus, and specific areas are set aside for disabled parking. A University Disabled Permit may be required in addition to the State Permit or license plates during specific times, so be sure to check the UT Parking website for requirements.

  • Parking is limited at UT Austin, and there are various types of parking permits available: A Permit – available to graduate assistants and staff, open parking lots
  • C Permit – available to students and staff, open parking lots
  • S Permit – available to commuting students; assigned one garage on campus

Always be sure to read the signs if parking on campus, as many areas have designated parking hours, time limits, and permit restrictions.

UT Share Pass – reloadable garage debit pass
Open-lot parking (A or C permits) are not guaranteed spots, as they fill typically before 9:00AM. Keep aware of parking signs, as you will be fined if you do not display the appropriate permit for that area. Many students take the shuttle to and from campus.

Shuttles

The UT Shuttle System is the largest university shuttle system in the country, with 14 routes and over 7.5 million passengers annually. The shuttle system provides an easy and cost effective way for students, faculty, staff, and visitors to access the UT campus. UT students, faculty, and staff may ride the shuttles at no charge with a valid UT photo ID.

Bicycles

Bicycles are a popular transportation option around campus and Austin as a whole. Bicycling is a significant component of The University's plan to reduce local traffic congestion and air pollution. Each year UT continues to work on improving bicycling on campus.

Housing

  • Austin has housing opportunities to suit everyone's tastes. Whether you prefer dorm-style living, a co-op or just an apartment, Austin has it all. Students are responsible for making their own housing arrangements. However, Texas Global and The Division of Housing and Food offers a limited number of graduate apartments in West Austin. Students seeking this type of housing must apply through the Housing website. Apartments are on the UT shuttle route and are available at competitive pricing.
  • The University Apartments are three distinct UT communities where everyone is a Longhorn, from your neighbors to the staff. The apartments are reserved for families, graduate students and undergraduates with at least 30 credit hours in good standing with the university. Discover which complex is right for you, read about the application process and get resources for living here.
