TPLA: TEA Requirements and Compliance

After successful admission and acceptance into the program, candidates:

  • Candidates must undergo a criminal history background check prior to employment as an educator [19 TAC §227.1(b)(1)]

  • Candidates must undergo a criminal history background check prior to clinical teaching [19 TAC §227.1(b)(2)]

  • Admission Requirements of each program in the EPP-listed by program [19 TAC §227.1(c)(1)]

  • Program Completion Requirements listed by program [19 TAC §227.1(c)(2)]

  • With the understanding that a candidate ineligibility may occur: The potential ineligibility of an individual who has been convicted of an offense for issuance of a certificate [19 TAC §227.1(d)(1)]

  • Candidates reserve the right to request a preliminary criminal history evaluation from TEA [19 TAC §227.1(d)(3)]

 

Within the first two days of class, you will receive information and forms regarding:

  • Code of Ethics

  • FERPA Release

  • Criminal History and Background check

  • Formal Admissions letter

  • Handbook

  • Handbook Compliance form

 

Exit Policy for Dismissal 

In accordance with the Texas Education Agency and 19 TAC 228.31(b), the University of Texas at Austin wishes to advise you of reasons candidates may be dismissed from the Educator Preparation Program. This exit policy for dismissal may include, but not be limited to, the following, at the discretion of the Associate Dean of Academic Affairs* with the advice of the program faculty that represents the certification area being sought by the candidate. 

  • Standard of Conduct/Educator Code of Ethics violation 

  • Failure to follow all attendance, dress code, and other guidelines 

  • UT Honor Code violation 

  • Criminal Background Check that precludes placement 

  • Failure to earn the minimum grade required in all teacher education courses 

  • Failure to make continual progress towards program completion

  • Two years of inactivity prior to finishing/graduation, e.g., no longer completing coursework, training, and testing requirements 

  • School/district refuses to accept the student for field experience/clinical teaching

  • School/district requests that the candidate be removed from a field/clinical teaching assignment

*The Director of Educator Preparation Services and the chair of the respective department will serve in the decision-making capacity in lieu of the Associate Dean of Academic Affairs for their respective programs.
