Installing Microsoft Apps
Eligible Microsoft 365 users can download and install apps such as the Microsoft Office suite.
Have you tried Microsoft 365 on the web?
Most Microsoft Office tasks can also be done using the web apps!
Before You Begin
Microsoft 365 resources are blocked on the Guest (utguest) network. If you are on campus wifi, you must be on the utexas network in order to sign into Microsoft 365.
If you are using a University-owned computer, you may need administrator privileges to install programs, or these apps may already be installed. If this applies to you, please contact your department's IT support team for assistance.
Installation (Windows/macOS)
In a web browser, navigate to https://office365.austin.utexas.edu/ and select Office 365 Portal.
Sign in with your UT EID and password when prompted. You may also be presented with a DUO multi-factor authentication authentication prompt.
On the Microsoft 365 page, select Install and more near the top right of the page.
Select Install Microsoft 365 apps.
On the Apps & devices page, choose the application you wish to install from the list (e.g. Install Office) to download the installation file.
Open the installation file that you downloaded and follow the setup wizard to install the apps.

Detailed, step-by-step installation instructions are available via Microsoft: Download and install or reinstall Microsoft 365 or Office 2021 on a PC or Mac

Troubleshooting
If you’re unable to download or activate Microsoft apps, make sure that you’re eligible. You may be ineligible to use the desktop version of Microsoft Office apps if you’re in one of the following roles
Affiliated workers
Visiting scholars
UTemps
Staff in select seasonal, camp, food service, or event worker positions
Emeritus professors
Former student, faculty, or staff
If you’re ineligible, you may have alternative options such as:
Using the equivalent web apps, which generally provide the same functionality.
If supported by your department:
Using device-based licensed installations of Office (https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/deployoffice/device-based-licensing)
Using volume licensed installations of Office (e.g. Microsoft Office 2024 LTSC)
Any request for exceptions to normal license assignment must:
Be submitted by a technical support contact (TSC) in your department.
Include an explanation of the business need for the exception.
You may not submit a request on your own behalf.
Requests will be considered based on license availability, business need, and whether alternative solutions are available.
Please consult with a technical support contact (TSC) in your department if you need assistance with any of these options. Individual units have broad discretion on how to manage Office installations and availability of alternative Office installs may vary.
Please contact the UT Service Desk if you have other questions about licensing.
