Fall 2013 Actuated AFO

Goal: Build an ankle foot orthosis (AFO) that allows movement in the sagittal and coronal planes that is actuated in the coronal plane to provide a physiologic response to a cross-slope surface.

Introduction:

Prostheses and orthoses that restore function to and stabilize those with neuromuscular impairments typically provide energy storage and return in the sagittal plane. Some active devices have been designed with actuation in the sagittal plane, but little investigation of the ability of coronal plane actuation to assist in maneuverability and balance control has been completed. To that end, we propose to design and build an active ankle-foot orthosis with actuation and control in the coronal plane for maneuvering assistance that does not interfere with motion in the sagittal plane.
