Procedure for Disk Images - archived 3/18/2018

This procedure describes the first steps that should be taken when born-digital materials are received and processed by AAA. These steps refer specifically to receiving and logging magnetic and optical media, bit-level preservation, and the rehousing and storage of the materials.

Receiving

  1. Accession of digital media
  2. Individual media assigned unique identifier.
  3. Create digital media log for inventory and processing (spreadsheet)
  4. Create file directory structure. Depending on the size of the collection it may be more expedient to create the directory at the command line. Review Creating directory structures in Terminal for instructions.
  5. Photograph all media and move images into appropriate folders.

Bit-level preservation

  1. Create disk image using Guymager.
  2. Complete mounting tests and record results in log.
  3. Create UUIDs
  4. Bag disk images, metadata

Rehousing

  1. Rehouse physical media for storage
