Glazing Best Practices
- Wax the bottom of the work for easier removal of glaze. Allow wax to dry.
- Only open one bucket of glaze at a time.
- Stir the glaze thoroughly, making sure to pick up any glaze that has settled on the bottom and sides.
- Place any tools being used on the lid matching the same glaze.
- Re-stir glaze every 5 minutes if using for multiple pieces.
- Most glazes require a 2-4 second dip.
- Allow glaze to drip off the piece and into the bucket.
- Close the glaze bucket and wash all tools used.
- Let the glaze dry thoroughly before handling or dipping a second time.
- Smooth over any holes or marks with a dry finger.
- Do this over a bucket of water.
- Use a sponge to remove any remaining glaze on the base of your piece.
- Clean up after yourself and place glazed work on the shelves marked “Glazeware.”
- Remember to fill out a “kiln firing sheet” and place it tucked under your piece.
