Glazing Best Practices

Glazing Best Practices

  • Wax the bottom of the work for easier removal of glaze. Allow wax to dry.

  • Only open one bucket of glaze at a time.

  • Stir the glaze thoroughly, making sure to pick up any glaze that has settled on the bottom and sides.

    • Place any tools being used on the lid matching the same glaze.

    • Re-stir glaze every 5 minutes if using for multiple pieces.

  • Most glazes require a 2-4 second dip.

  • Allow glaze to drip off the piece and into the bucket.

  • Close the glaze bucket and wash all tools used.

  • Let the glaze dry thoroughly before handling or dipping a second time.

  • Smooth over any holes or marks with a dry finger.

    • Do this over a bucket of water.

    • Use a sponge to remove any remaining glaze on the base of your piece.

  • Clean up after yourself and place glazed work on the shelves marked “Glazeware.”

    • Remember to fill out a “kiln firing sheet” and place it tucked under your piece.
