(DC) [Import] Digital Certificate (Windows 10/11)

Before installing your digital certificate on your Apple iOS device, please consult with the ISO page

After installing a your digital certificate on your device, anyone with physical access to your device will have the ability to decrypt and view sensitive information within email or other applications on the device.  PLEASE ENSURE that you have protected/hardened as it very important to keep sensitive information away from prying eyes.

The Windows OS utilizes a tool called the Windows Certificate Store, that globally manages certificates for the entire operating systems and applications that utilize this feature (Internet Explorer, Outlook, etc..).  This means that you can import the certificate once, and have it recognized and utilized without any special configuration.   

NOT ALL applications utilize the Windows Certificate Store, please make sure you have access to third-party application documentation to assist you using your digital client certificate with that application.

Instructions for Windows 7.x and 8.0 are available here.   Please note that you must have an exception with ISO to utilize the older operating systems.

 

  1. When you have obtained your client certificate, you need to visit the website provided or open the email with the certificate attached. Download the certificate to a folder where you can access it. You may have to enter a password - which should have been provided to you. Please locate that password before your proceed.

  2. Locate the downloaded P12 file.   Double-click the file.

A file with the extension of p12 will cause the Windows Certificate Import Wizard to launch.   If this does not happen, please contact the help desk to ensure your Windows computer is properly configured.

  1. The following Certificate Import Wizard window should appear. Please click “Current User” and then click NEXT.

  2. In the next dialog, Private Key Protection, the Certificate Import Wizard, will prompt you for the password located in

  3. In the next dialog, Private Key Protection, the Certificate Import Wizard, will prompt you for the password located in

    entry. Enter that password in the blank box. Click NEXT.

Please note!

  • You can click "Display Password" to show the password as you type it in, instead of display the dots.

  • It is recommended that you do not enable the "Enable strong private key protection." checkbox.  This will allow the certificate to be used easily without unnecessary prompts to enter the encryption password.

  • It is recommended that you do not enable the "Mark this key as exportable" checkbox.  This will prevent unauthorized access/export of your certificate and private key.  You can always re-download the same certificate and key as a P12 file from

  • Please enable the "Include all extended properties" checkbox.  This will ensure that all required fields and properties are imported and the certificate will work appropriately.

  1. In the next dialog, ensure the option to "Automatically select the certificate ..." is enabled and then click NEXT.

  2. In the next dialog, a summary appears. Click FINISH.

  3. If all goes well, you should see the next dialog that indicate the import was successful.  Click OK.
