May 2021: Unpacking the Dominant Narrative

Definitions:

  • Dominant Culture: One whose values, language, and ways of behaving are imposed on a subordinate culture or cultures through economic or political power[1].
  • Organizational Culture: Consistent, observable patterns of behavior in an organization. This is shaped by incentives, is a process of sense-making, is a social control system, and is dynamic [2].
  • Dominant Narrative: Created through social construction. These are the stories we use to make sense of the world around us. What we know to be true, the social contracts we create establishing norms, traditions, and expectations.

Questions to Consider:

  1. Think about the things that are in our control, what can be done to shift the narrative to one that establishes norms, traditions, and expectations that are rooted in appreciation, affirmation, and support?
  2. How do you think you’re contributing to organizational culture both positively and negatively?
  3. How can you pivot away from some of the concepts shared in the document and towards the antidotes?
  4. How do we examine our work to ensure it’s in alignment with our goals without embracing limiting elements of the dominant narrative?

15% Solutions:

"You can reveal the actions, however small, that everyone can do immediately. At a minimum, these will create momentum, and that may make a BIG difference. 15% Solutions show that there is no reason to wait around, feel powerless, or fearful. They help people pick it up a level. They get individuals and the group to focus on what is within their discretion instead of what they cannot change. With a very simple question, you can flip the conversation to what can be done and find solutions to big problems that are often distributed widely in places not known in advance. Shifting a few grains of sand may trigger a landslide and change the whole landscape."
