Eligibility/Requirements
Journals: Faculty who request COLA funding for a course release, summer salary, GRA/editorial support, etc. must provide information to COLA on length of term, journal circulation, number of submissions per year, importance of contributions to academic disciplines, and amount of financial support provided by the publisher or society producing the journal. Request should be submitted to the Dean’s Office before the faculty member accepts the position.
Professional Organizations: Faculty who request COLA funding for course release must provide information to COLA on the length of term, scope of duties, and importance of contributions to academic disciplines as well as the faculty member’s current load and general teaching requirements in the department. Request should be submitted to the Dean’s Office before the faculty member accepts the position.
*Some journals and/or leadership roles in professional organizations may not qualify for course releases and/or funding resources.
Course Releases
Single-year commitments/contracts: The faculty member’s home department must use its discretionary pool of course releases for the faculty member serving as journal editor or leading a professional organization.
Multi-year commitments/contracts: The faculty member’s home department will use its discretionary pool of course releases in the first year, and COLA will provide a Dean’s Office release in the second year; this rotation will continue for the term of the contract. However, this arrangement will not provide the Internal Buyout Rate reallocation of $7,000 per course release for instructor replacement costs.
Funding Resources
Journals: Journal editors who do not come to a formal institutional support agreement with COLA may still apply for GRA Editorial Assistantship funds that COLA opens for applications each year, although funding is not guaranteed.
Faculty may request additional resources from their departments and/or COLA to be reviewed on an individual basis.
