BMSF Classes Spring 2026
Our Spring Courses will start with an overview of the principles of mass spectrometry and then go into proteomics and metabolomics. They will be taught by the BMSF staff.
March 25 Introduction to Mass Spectrometry
Instructor: Dr. Maria Person
The basics of mass spectrometry will be covered for understanding of mass spectra, including how to calculate charge state, resolution and mass accuracy. Deconvolution of mass for molecules like proteins from mass spectra, MALDI and TOF instrument configurations for mass spectrometers will be discussed, with interactive problem solving.
April 1 Introduction to LC-MS based Proteomics
Instructor: Dr. Ping Gong
We will demonstrate how proteins are identified using liquid chromatography and mass spectrometry.
April 8 Proteomics Data Analysis
Instructor: Dr. Maria Person
We will cover peptide fragmentation to generate MS/MS, then discuss the concepts underlying database search to identify proteins from LC-MS/MS data using the search algorithm Sequest HT. Validation methods using probability and false discovery rates will be explained, then key considerations when choosing search parameters and creating workflows using Proteome Discoverer.
April 15 Introduction to Metabolomics
Instructor: Dr. Sean Meehan
We will go over the basics in LC-MS Metabolomics concepts:
Experimental Design/Considerations
Sample Preparation
Chromatography Decisions
Metabolite Mass Spectra and Annotation
Data Analysis and Tools
