Producer Workflows
While the bulk of digital preservation work at UTL is carried out by the Digital Stewardship unit, the creation of the SIPs can be performed by producers to maintain compliance with standards, reduce bottlenecks, reduce digital backlogs, and get collections written to UTL’s digital archive more quickly.
Producers are defined as the entities that provide or create the SIPs to the digital archive. From the perspective of Digital Stewardship, those producers are both the collection managers from various library units and our own unit’s Digital Archivist and Digitization staff. All producers must follow this Producers Manual and complete the relevant steps outlined below in the common use cases decision tree.
Currently, there are three main established workflows to send collection material to Digital Stewardship: physical material sent to Digitization staff for digital reformatting, born-digital physical media carriers or digital file transfers sent to Digital Archivist for born-digital processing, and digital file transfers sent directly to Digital Preservation Coordinator for digital preservation.
*This last workflow is only to be used with prior pre-approval and coordination with the Digital Preservation Coordinator.
